FC Edmonton News Release

The highlight week for FC Edmonton defender Mallan Roberts continues, with the 23-year-old centre back being named to Canada's 35-man provisional roster for the upcoming Gold Cup. Roberts is currently with the Canadian national team in Orlando, Fl. as they prepare for a two-leg, Olympic qualifying series versus Dominica, June 11 and 16.

The final roster of 23-players must come from the provisional roster and in the event of an injury or in the event a player needs to be replaced, only a player from the provisional roster can be called into fill his place.

"It's another step in Mallan's development, it will be interesting to see how he has fit in with the current squad for the World Cup qualifiers," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller stated. "Much will depend on how he's settled in and how he's acclimatized to the rest of the group. It's a real compliment to him from being out of the picture entirely, to getting his Canadian passport, to Benito [Floro] realizing he has another potential defender on his hands."

Canada opens the Gold Cup on Wednesday, July 8 against El Salvador at StubHub Center in Carson, California, USA. They then head to Houston to take on Jamaica on July 11 before coming to Toronto to take on Costa Rica at BMO Field on July 14.

It will be the first time a Gold Cup game takes place in Canada.

Canada will assemble at the end of June in Santa Barbara, California prior to the tournament's opening game. The top two teams from each group; as well as the two highest-seeded third-place finishers will advance to the knock-out stages.

Canada won the Gold Cup in 2000 and has since succeeded in making it to the tournament semi-finals on two other occasions (2002, 2007); and made it to the quarter-finals in 2009.

The final 23-player roster announcement will be made by CONCACAF and the Participating Member Associations on June 23.

In Canada, Sportsnet holds the broadcast rights to the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament. Check local listings to see where it will air in your region.
