FC Edmonton Aims to Reach 2014 Amway Canadian Championship Final
Published on May 13, 2014 under North American Soccer League (NASL) News Release
NEW YORK, NY (May 13, 2014) - FC Edmonton will continue to carry the banner of the North American Soccer League (NASL) when it travels to face the MLS' Montreal Impact in the second-leg of the 2014 Amway Canadian Championship (ACC) Semifinals on Wednesday, with the Eddies holding a 2-1 aggregate (total goals) lead in the series. The winner of the home-and-away series moves one step closer for a possible CONCACAF Champions League berth, the ultimate prize for the Canadian champion.
The Edmonton-Montreal ACC Semifinal second-leg clash is set for Montreal's Stade Saputo on May 14, at 7:30 pm ET and will be broadcast in Canada on Rogers Sportsnet.
"It's a special occasion for the club, arguably the most important game in the club's history," said FC Edmonton coach, Colin Miller on Wednesday's encounter against Montreal. "We've managed a win in three out of our last four games and we know we have a difficult task ahead of us on Wednesday, but we'll be looking forward to it. The lads are totally committed to the cause and are all very excited at what's taken place and what will happen on Wednesday."
Edmonton posted a historic 2-1 win in the first-leg of the ACC Semifinals at Clarke Stadium seven day ago thanks to goals from forward Tomi Ameobi and midfielder Michael Nonni. The victory was the first by the Eddies in the tournament semifinals and also they became the first NASL club to defeat an MLS team at the annual Canadian competition.
"This is so exciting for FC Edmonton and their fans so the entire NASL family will be pulling for them to win on Wednesday night," said NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson. "Our clubs really cherish the opportunity to compete with other clubs and Leagues, and securing a spot in the CONCACAF Champion's League would be a great accomplishment for FC Edmonton."
FC Edmonton reached the ACC Semifinals after eliminating fellow NASL side, Ottawa Fury FC in the opening round series last month. After a scoreless first-leg in Ottawa on April 23, Edmonton posted a 3-1 victory in the return match seven days later.
The Edmonton-Montreal winner will advance to the ACC Final to take on the winner of the other semifinal between Vancouver Whitecaps FC-Toronto FC (Toronto leads 2-1 on aggregate) to be played on May 28 and June 4, with the 2014 Canadian champion qualifying into the 2014-2015 CONCACAF Champion's League.
