New Orleans VooDoo News Release
CHICAGO - New Orleans DL MARLON FAVORITE has been named National Guard Community MVP of the Week for his recent philanthropic efforts.
Favorite (6-1, 325, LSU) is in his first season in the AFL and his first with the VooDoo.
Favorite recently went to a local elementary school to read, visit with students and sign autographs.
"It was great visiting with all of the kids," Favorite said. "I try and do as much as possible to help in my community."
Favorite also played a large role in promoting and helping with the "Preauxs vs. Jeauxs" charity flag football game that was hosted by the VooDoo on January 27. Being a former LSU standout, Favorite made numerous public appearances to raise awareness for the event.
"It benefited a great cause, and it was such a blessing that we could help," Favorite said.
All of the proceeds from the game went towards purchasing books for the Ella Dolhonde Elementary School's new library as well as towards "Each One Save One", a non-profit organization that works with school districts and local government agencies to establish mentoring programs for kids, where none exist.
With a passion for mentoring students, Favorite tries to do as many visits to local schools as he can.
"I try to speak about any issues that are impacting the students," Favorite said. "It may be a big test week, it may be the week for drug awareness, or gang awareness education; whatever it is, I make sure I touch on that subject."
Favorite was born and raised in New Orleans and has lived there his entire life. Being able to give back to the community that has given him so much is how he measures his success.
"Being successful is not about how much money you have," Favorite said. "It's being selfless and being able to help someone in need, it's a blessing that I've been given the opportunity to do that."
The New Orleans VooDoo (4-5) will host the Arizona Rattlers (7-3) on Saturday at 8:00 pm ET and can be seen on the "AFL Live" viewer on UStream.tv.
The National Guard Community MVP is awarded to one player each week in recognition of their commitment to community service. Following the 2012 season, players will be voted on by fans to become the National Guard Community MVP of the Year.
