Fargo takes series with 10-4 win

August 13, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL-Another big night for RedHawks third baseman Jeremiah Piepkorn helped down the Schaumburg Flyers 10-4 on Thursday night at Alexian Field.

The Flyers struck first in the game, with a Jeff Dunbar double, driving in Richard Mercado to give Schaumburg an early 1-0 lead.

The score would not stay the same for long, as a leadoff double for Alan Rick got the action started for the RedHawks. Jeff Stevens came into run for after Rick seemed to be injured on the play. A Carlo Cota walk brought Justin Justice to plate. After a lazy fly out by Justice, and a strikeout looking to Mike Coles, Zach Penprase lined a triple into the right field gap to score two as the RedHawks took a 2-1 lead.

After Ruben Salazar reached on an error in the fourth, Randall Simon kept the line moving with a solid hit up the middle. A base knock by Piepkorn drove in Salazar to increase the lead to 3-1. Flyers starter Dustin Glant was able to limit the damage however, getting Stevens to ground into a double play, and then recording a lineout by Cota.

The Flyers looked to answer in the bottom half of their inning. A base hit by Felix Jose, followed by a Mercado walk and Dunbar single set the stage for Tony Mansolino. A deep drive to the outfield was plenty for Jose to score on a sac fly, cutting the RedHawks lead to one at 3-2.

However the game started to get away from the Flyers in the sixth. After another base hit by Piepkorn, Dustin Glant was removed for righty Kris Jiggits. Cota was retired, but an error by the Flyers allowed Stevens Piepkorn to score, which moved the score to 6-2.

The RedHawks would add four more to the board, giving them ten runs on eleven hits for the night. Simon hit a solo home run, his 13th of the season, and Nic Jackson hit a bases clearing double. The Flyers tried to get back into the game in the bottom of the eight with an RBI double by Mercado, but it was too little too late for the Flyers.

The Flyers did have a few bright spots in the game, especially the play of Mercado and Jose. Mercado was 2-4 on the night scoring two of the Flyers runs, while Jose reached based four times while scoring twice.

Glant took the loss tonight, moving him to 6-6 on the season. RedHawks starter Nick Fellman saw his record even out to 5-5 after the win.

The Flyers now stand at 34-46 on the season, while the RedHawks move up to 44-34. The RedHawks won the season series between the two teams 9-8.

LHP Alain Quijano (3-5, 5.90) gets the start for Flyers tomorrow. Kansas City sends out LHP Ryan Knippschild (3-5, 4.56). It's Jimmy Buffet Night, followed by post-game fireworks. First pitch is 6:45 at Alexian Field.
