Rochester Knighthawks News Release
After Saturday's East Division Finals, Rochester Knighthawks fans hopped on social media this weekend to thank the team, the coaches, and Owner and General Manager Curt Styres for another long playoff run.
"Thank you Curt and the entire team! You've given us something to be very proud of," wrote Paul Cusker on Facebook. "We know you'll be back in the hunt next year!"
"Thanks for the ride. You have given it your all and that is all we can ask for. Three Championships in a row," wrote Laura Murray. "No one can take that away from the Hawks! Pick yourself up, dust off your shoulder and hold your heads high!
The Knighthawks, who won a league-record three straight Champion's Cups, are in the midst of their greatest period of success in franchise history. The team has counted on the "7th Man" during that period of time, and the support was evident Saturday in Toronto as hundreds of fans, clad in teal, sat across four sections in the lower bowl. Most of the fans boarded the five buses "" chartered by Styres "" to travel to Toronto to root on the Knighthawks.
The fans were noticeable as they started a "Let's Go Hawks!" chant prior to player introductions. The fans also screamed with enthusiasm as Rochester mounted a furious comeback in the second half behind a six-goal effort from Stephen Keogh and a tough defensive effort.
"Thank you Hawks organization for a great season and a ride to Toronto," wrote Nancy Klein, who was in Section 114 with her Dan Dawson sign. "We still have the 3peat to be proud of! I guess we can share the cup for 1 year, but next year it's coming back to the Roc."
Fans also came to the ACC from Six Nations, Kitchener, Ontario, and from other parts of southern Ontario and western New York. Knighthawks supporters also watched on a big screen TV at the Stock Exchange Restaurant or held parties at their homes to watch the big game.
Tim Knab, who helped organize the viewing party at Stock with John Terrigino, was very thankful for the team's three-year run. Cheering for the Knighthawks has become part of his family's Saturday ritual. His wife, Jen, and son, Dylan, were in the stands at the Air Canada Centre to watch Game Two and the tie-breaker game of the East Division Finals.
"Thank you Rochester Knighthawks for an amazing season," Tim posted on Facebook. "It was a great season and I'm so proud (of the team). THANK YOU!"
Rochester sports fan Keith Wozniak also added his admiration for a Knighthawks' franchise that has shown a commitment to winning championships.
"Congrats to the @RocKnighthawks for a great season," added Wozniak on his twitter account, @keithwozniak. "You're a model sports team! I wish the others focused on winning like the KHawks do!"
The players and staff reciprocated the love for their fans via social media. Rochester forward Joe Walters jumped on his Twitter account to thank the fans after the game.
"Thank you to the 7th Man that made the trip and supported us! We will be back."
"#KHawkNation are the best fans in the league," added Knighthawks public address announcer Scott Brooks on Twitter.
It was a historic run by the Knighthawks. Not only did they make league history by winning three straight titles from 2012-14, the team also made Rochester sports history. No other team in the 100-plus seasons of sports in the Flower City has ever won three consecutive championships. Knighthawks ticket operations manager Ben Cerow recognized the team's place in sports history.
"Beyond proud of the @RocKnighthawks players and staff," he posted. "I'm so honored to have played my small role in such a unique part of sports history."
Yet, it was fan Sandy Korhumel who summed up the feelings and emotions of the entire fanbase and organization when she posted her thoughts on Facebook.
"Thank you to Curt Styres, Mike Hasen, and of course the players themselves for another exciting season," she wrote. "It may not have ended the way we hoped, but no one can take away the fact that we OWNED the cup for 3 great years. And I have faith that we will be seeing it back in Rochester soon enough."
