Daytona Tortugas News Release
In the year that Jack Roosevelt "Jackie" Robinson would have turned 90-years old, the Daytona Cubs, the Links Foundation and the County of Volusia are celebrating his lasting mark on baseball and society with "Jackie Robinson Heritage Night" Tonight!
Robinson broke baseball's color barrier on March 17, 1946,Jackie Robinson when he played in the first racially integrated, professional baseball game at City Island Ballpark in Daytona Beach. At the time he was playing with the Montreal Royals, a farm team of the Brooklyn Dodgers, for whom he would play for one year later.
"What Jackie Robinson did for the game of baseball is immeasurable," said Daytona Cubs General Manager Bill Papierniak. "Just as remarkable is what the good people of Daytona Beach and Volusia County did to allow him to play here in 1946. For that, we are yet again honoring Jackie and our area citizens."
"Even today, decades after his death, Jackie Robinson's accomplishments and his impact on American society continue to resonate," Said Frank T. Bruno, Volusia County Chair. "He was an American original and a national hero, and we are honored to recognize his achievements here in the community where he made history."
