June 13, 2005 - Central Baseball League (Central League) News Release

Jackson OF Vince Faison and El Paso RHP Derrick DePriest were chosen by SportsTicker, the Central League's official statistician, as Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 6-June 12.

Faison went 8-for-21 with five home runs in five different games, two doubles and 12 RBI, good for a 1.143 slugging percentage, as the Senators went 3-4 on the week. The Lyons, Ga., native is currently hitting .309, is in a five-way tie for the league lead with nine home runs, and leads the league with seven triples and 26 extra-base hits.

Originally a first-round draft pick of San Diego in 1999, Faison, 23, spent five seasons in the Padres organization, reaching as high as AA Mobile in 2002 and 2003. After the 2003 season, he was shipped to the Seattle organization, and played with four different clubs, including AAA Tacoma, in 2004. 2005 is Faison's first season in independent baseball.

DePriest appeared in four games for the Diablos and pitched eight innings without allowing a run, striking out eight and notching two victories for the Diablos, who went 5-2 on the week. Sporting a sizzling 1.00 ERA in 17 appearances, DePriest is tied for fourth in the league with five saves.

A native of Homestead, Florida, DePriest was a four-year letter winner in both baseball and football at the University of North Carolina. He received a full scholarship to play football for the Tar Heels and was the starting holder from 1996 to 1999. A walk-on member of the baseball team, he was a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference and a second-season All-American during his senior season, and led the nation with a 1.71 ERA during his junior year. Drafted by Montreal in the 17th round of the 2000 draft, he spent the 2000 season with the Expos organization, was injured all of 2001, and signed with Pittsburgh for the 2002 season before moving to Albany-Colonie of the Northern League. In 2003, he split time with North Shore of the Northeast League and San Angelo of the Central League, where he registered a 2.05 ERA in 21 outings. He also spent the 2005 season as an assistant coach at Coppin State University.
