October 11, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Jersey Express News Release

Newark, NJ. The ABA Newark Express along with its affiliate, the Irvington Express Small Fry Basketball Program, in conjunction with the City of Irvington, and Mayor Wayne Smith ran the very first FREE youth basketball camp in Irvington run by the pro's.

The two-day camp ran Saturday and Sunday at Irvington High School in Irvington, NJ. Camp participants received instruction from Newark Express head coach and former NBA center Ron Moore, along with Irvington Express Small Fry Head Coach Quaasim Austin. Day 1 featured newly signed Zakee Boyd, Philip Smith, Terrance Watkins, Sekani Francis and ABA All Star Obadiah Toppin. Capped off by a special appearance by NY Knick Field Marketing Coordinator Troy Bowers, providing the Life Skills portion of the camp.

On day 2 campers learned what it takes to win games and be team players. Bringing in 7' center Jonathan Oliver and Elijah Thorpe to close out the camp by showing the kids that it takes teamwork to be successful not only on the court but in life. At the end of the day, the kids got their chance to play the pros.

"We'd like to thank the Honorable Mayor Wayne Smith, for not only signing off on the partnership, but for also providing an inspiring welcoming speech to the kids. After taking a few shots to help get things started, we realized...he's got game," stated co-owner Marsha Blount.
