San Diego Riptide News Release
SAN DIEGO â The Escondido Cougars are 3-0 for the first time since 1977 thanks in large part to this week's sandiegoriptide.com High School Ironman of the Week; WR/DB Mark Cordes.
Last Friday, Cordes caught just three balls on offense; however, all three went for scores in the 32-6 win over Calexico. He snagged touchdown passes for 7, 40 and 30 yards. On the year, he has seven scores in three games.
On defense, he finished with six tackles and four pass breakups. Cordes and the rest of the first team offense and defense sat out most of the second half because of the large 25-0 lead at the half.
"Mark is a complete team player," says Escondido Head Coach Paul Gomes, who is also the athletic director. "He will do anything that is needed for the team. He's the kind of player that ever coach wishes to have. He plays great on offense, defense and special teams. He never wants to come off the field."
He will be honored prior to the Riptide's 2003 home opener with all the weekly award winners and the Ironman of the Year. The entire Escondido varsity football team will receive tickets to that game to support their teammate.
Additional tickets to that game will be available at discounted rates for family members, friends and classmates. Riptide Head Coach Cree Morris will stop by the Cougars practice later this week to present Cordes a certificate and talk to the team.
Cordes is a 6'1" 175-pound senior, who maintains a 3.5 GPA. He also is the team's primary returner on special teams. He did not have an balls kicked his way, though last week he returned on over 90 yards for a score. Prior to the game, one of the Escondido team buses broke down on the 142-mile journey to Calexico. The team still made the game in plenty of time. This Friday, the Cougars play home vs. San Marcos (1535 N. Broadway, Escondido 92026). Kickoff is slated for 7:30pm.
