New York/New Jersey Juggernaut News Release

MONTCLAIR, NJ - Sixteen innings and five hours after the first pitch was thrown, Juggernaut pitcher/left fielder Gina Oaks scored on a wild throw to first by the New England Riptide pitcher, Jocelyn Forest, to give the Juggernaut a 4-3 win.

Oaks not only scored the winning run, but also pitched 9.2 scoreless innings for the Juggernaut when head coach Linda Derk pulled her starter, Kaci Clark, in the seventh inning. In her relief appearance, Oaks only allowed two hits and struck out 11. Clark pitched 6.1 innings, struck out four, allowed six hits, three earned runs, and three walks. One of those three walks came in the sixth inning when she walked right fielder Lyndsey Angus with the bases loaded to bring the Riptide within one of the Juggernaut.

The Riptide tied the score at three in the seventh inning on two errors. Designated hitter Meg Young gained second on an error before Juggernaut third baseman Jaclyn Pasquerella threw centerfielder LaDonia Hughes' bunt wide of first base, allowing Young to score the tying run.

The next run to be scored would be the Juggernaut's winning run in the 16th.

The Riptide got on the board first in the second inning when third baseman Rachael McGinnis walked and then scored on a bloop single into left field by first baseman Emily Krueger. The Juggernaut then answered back in the fourth when shortstop Lyndsey Klein led off the inning with a double down the third base line. Catcher Germaine Fairchild followed with a single up the middle to score Klein and tie the score at one.

NY/NJ scored two more runs in the fifth with two doubles; a leadoff double by second baseman Carri Leto and an RBI two-base hit by first baseman Kellie Wilkerson. Swinging the hot bat for the second night in the row, Leto finished the night with four hits in seven at bats. As a team, the Juggernaut managed 17 hits throughout the night, but stranded 22 runners on base.

New England starting pitcher Megan Matthews, pitched 7.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and three earned runs, while reliever Jocelyn Forest (0-2) finished the game, giving up only six hits and no earned runs. Offensively, second baseman Nicole Thompson was the only player with more than one hit for the Riptide, going 2-for-7 on the night.
