Errors Costly As Charlotte Sweeps Doubleheader

Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
With Hurricane Irene looming, Jupiter and Charlotte played the final two games of their series on Wednesday night, but while the weather was perfect, the Hammerhead defense wasn't.
The Hammerheads committed costly errors in both halves, allowing a pair of unearned runs to decide each game. In the opener, the effect was immediate, as Jupiter fell 4-3 to Charlotte. The second game saw the miscues help the Stone Crabs get out ahead in a game that finished 5-1.
After the two teams got just one hit apiece in their first three innings, Charlotte took a 3-0 lead in Game 1 on just one hit in the 4th. Michael Sheridan's single was sandwiched between a pair of walks by starter Jose Rosario to load the bases with one out. Matt Hall lofted a sacrifice fly to score the game's first run, and as the Hammerheads tried to catch the trailing runner in a pickle, Sheridan scored as well.
The first of Jupiter's two errors in the seven-inning game came on the next at-bat, as what should have been the third out to first baseman Taylor Krick went under his glove and into right field, scoring Charlotte's third run.
The Hammerheads nearly stormed back, thanks to the continued hot streak of Jeff Dominguez. The shortstop had his first career five-RBI night in Tuesday's game. Already 2-for-2 on Wednesday, Dominguez's base hit drove in Jupiter's first run of the night in the 6th inning.
Dominguez then extended his team lead in stolen bases to 24, forcing a Charlotte error on the attempt to catch him, which allowed Dallas Poulk to score and left Dominguez as the tying run in scoring position. Rehabbing Marlins right fielder Scott Cousins took advantage, knocking a ball into right field to tie the game.
With the Hammerheads holding all the momentum thanks in large part to Dominguez's efforts at the plate and on the bases, his miscue in the field proved even more costly. Reliever Collin Cargill allowed a pair of singles while getting the inning's first out, putting men on first and second for Tyler Morrison.
Morrison grounded hard to Dominguez, who fielded the ball and ran to second to start what could have been an inning-ending double play. But his throw to first was high and out of reach, allowing Reid Fronk to come around from second and score what proved to be the game's deciding run.
In the night's second game, while an error may have allowed the deciding runs to score, it wasn't nearly as close an overall performance as the first contest had been.
Charlotte knocked out 11 hits in the seven-inning game, including a trio of doubles that helped them to a 5-1 win over Jupiter.
Already up 1-0 on an Anthony Scelfo RBI single in the 1st, Charlotte made two quick outs in the 3rd. Michael Sheridan grounded to third base for what should have been the final out of the inning, but Taylor Krick's throw was short and in the dirt, allowing Sheridan to reach on the error.
With an extra out to play with, the Stone Crabs took advantage, following with an RBI double from Mark Thomas and another run-scoring hit from Scelfo, part of a 3-for-4 night.
Nate Woods, Rony Peralta and Dallas Poulk knocked out back-to-back-to-back singles in the bottom half to cut the lead to 3-1, but those were the only hits Jupiter got in all of Game 2. Charlotte starter Jake Thompson was perfect in his five other innings, as was reliever Josh Satow in the 7th.
Held to just eight hits over the two games, the Hammerheads will now seek shelter from Hurricane Irene on Thursday before kicking off the final four games of the Fins & Feathers Series for 2011. Jupiter plays the "visiting" team in the opening matchup of Roger Dean Stadium's two tenants on Friday, before "hosting" Palm Beach for the final three games.
