Eric Martins hits in 29 straight and breaks WBL record

Chico, CA – Breakers Infielder and Captain Eric Martins broke the Western Baseball League’s consecutive game hitting streak last night in Chico as he hit safely in 29th consecutive games. Manny Gonzalez of the Solano Steelheads held the previous record with a 28 game hitting streak. Martins’ broke the record during his third at bat of the evening, hitting a line drive to left field scoring teammate Kevin Baderdeen.

During the streak, which started June 16th, 2002, Martins is hitting .360 (42-118) including six doubles, one HR and 18 RBI. The streak includes 10 multi-hit games. Martins, 29, the former Oakland Athletics farmhand, spent seven season in the Athletics organization, before being released in 2001 after shoulder surgery. He had a career .276 average, with 21 HR and 262 RBI in 661 total games as an Athletic.

Martins joined the Breakers in 2001 and quickly became the captain of the Breakers Championship team in 2001. In his second season as the Breakers Captain, Martins is currently hitting .330 (65-197) with 29 runs scored, nine doubles, two triples, two homeruns and 32 RBI. The Breakers are currently in the middle of a nine-game road trip through Northern California, where they will finish and return home Friday, July 19th, 2002.
