Long Beach Breakers News Release
Chico, CA â In what now seems as a talent bed for hitting streaks, Long Beach Breakers Infielder Eric Martins last night tied the Western Baseball League's consecutive game hitting streak at 28 games. Martins is the second Breaker player to challenge the streak after former teammate Ryan Lehr hit in 25 straight this season before being signed by the Baltimore Orioles. Martins is now tied with former Solano Steelhead Manny Gonzalez who accomplished the feet in 1999.
During the streak, which started June 16th, 2002, Martins is hitting .360 (41-114) including 6 doubles, 1 HR and 17 RBI. The streak includes 10 multi-hit games. Martins, 29, the former Oakland Athletics farmhand, spent 7 season in the Athletics organization, before being released in 2001 after shoulder surgery. Martins spent 7 seasons in the Oakland organization where he had a career .276 average with 21 HR and 262 RBI's in 661 total games as an Athletic.
Martins joined the Breakers in 2001 and quickly became the captain of the Breakers Championship team in 2001. In his second season as the Breakers Captain, Martins is currently hitting .330 (65-197) with 29 runs scored, 9 doubles, 2 triples 2 Homeruns and 32 RBI's. The Breakers are currently in the middle of a 9-game road trip through Northern California, where they will finish and return home Friday, July 19th, 2002.
