Published on March 1, 2018 under Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) News Release
Original NWHL players Emily Field of the Boston Pride and Kourtney Kunichika of the Buffalo Beauts have been named co-recipients of the NWHL Player of the Week Award.
On Sunday, Field scored two goals in Boston's 3-0 victory over the Whale, while Kunichika had a goal and an assist in Buffalo's stunning, come-from-behind 4-3 win on the road against the Riveters.
Field said of the honor, "That's exciting! It was a great team win! We played as hard as we could the whole 60 minutes and I think that had a big impact on the W."
For the season, Field has 5 goals and 5 assists in 14 games. Prior to joining the NWHL for its inaugural season, the 5-6 forward graduated from Boston College in 2015. Named captain as a senior, Field was 52-86-138 in 149 games played over four years at BC. She was a member of Team USA that won gold at the 2011 IIHF World Women U18 Championship in Stockholm.
Kunichika, in her third season in Buffalo after four years at RIT, leads the Beauts in scoring this season, with 4 goals and 10 assists for 14 points in 13 games. She plays on a masterful line in Buffalo with Hayley Scamurra and Maddie Elia. In 129 games over four seasons at RIT - an all-time record at the school - Kunichika had 54 goals and 82 assists for 136 points.
"As a team, we still haven't played a full solid 60 minutes like the team we know we are, but I'm happy we were able to persevere and come back to win," said Kunichika. "I have to give credit to my linemates. We work very well together and our different styles of play complement each other into a cohesive line. I'm grateful to be recognized for this week."
