Elks Set to Open Season on Road Friday Against Klamath Falls

June 1, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

Coming off their runner-up finish last year when they finished the season an impressive 30-23, the Elks are hoping that this is finally the year that they bring a championship trophy to Bend, Oregon. The Elks will play their first home game June 10th against the Corvallis Knights, but will first play on the road against the Klamath Falls Gems.

Players from Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, and Saint Mary's are among the many set to play for the Elks this summer, hoping to be part of a championship squad. Head Coach Sean Kinney, now in his 2nd year at the helm of the Bend Elks, is very excited about the prospects of this upcoming season, saying "the combination of experienced players returning and the new young talented players arriving in Bend should allow for us to be very successful as we look to repeat what we did last year and take the extra step of bringing a trophy home."

The Bend Elks will open up their 2011 campaign against the Klamath Falls Gems, a new addition to the 9-team West Coast League, and the Elks are looking to start off their season similarly to last year, where they started an impressive 16-4 before faltering down the stretch until their playoff run that took them to a Winner-Take-All game 3 against the Wenatchee AppleSox for the WCL title.

The probable pitching rotation for this weekend is Nick Stiltner, Jason Wilson, and Daniel Chavez. Stiltner, a pitcher now returning for his 3rd season with the Bend Elks, was a reliable pitcher for the Elks last year despite his 1-3 record, as he pitched 33 innings for the Elks last season, including Game 1 of the Championship Series against the AppleSox, and also recorded a save. Jason Wilson, a Bend native, is also a returner as he comes back for his second season with the Elks, where he had a 1-0 record in 21 and 1/3 innings for the Elks. Daniel Chavez is coming for his first season with the Elks, but comes to the Elks after an impressive spring with the college of San Mateo, where he went 6-2 with a 2.35 ERA in 53 innings in helping the college of San Mateo reach the NorCal Super Regionals. The Game times for the series against Klamath Falls are 6:35 on Friday and Saturday, and 5:35 on Sunday.
