Elks fall to Blue Jackets 7-3

July 25, 2012 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

The Bend Elks left 11 runners on base against the Kitsap Blue Jackets on Wednesday, losing on the road by a score of 7-3.

The Bend Elks scored three runs in the top of the 3rd inning to take an early 3-0 lead. IT started with back to back singles by Shawn O'Brien and Steven Halcomb to start the inning. After the sacrifice bunt by Joey Mathews turned into a throwing error on Kitsap starter Michael Holback that allowed O'Brien to score, Jordan Copeland reached on catcher's obstruction to give the Bend Elks runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Bo Walter delivered an RBI single to score Mathews, and a run came across as Jordan Copeland came home to give the Elks the 3-0 lead.

That would be all the runs the Elks would score as the Blue Jackets scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd off of Elks starter Darin Gillies (3-2), due in part to 5 hits in the inning, to regain the lead 4-3. That would be all of the scoring until the bottom of the 8th, when Kitsap shortstop Scotty Burcham delivered a 3 run triple to give the Blue Jackets the final 7-3 margin. Brandon Snyder pitched 3 and 2/3 of shutout baseball in relief of Gillies, surrendering only 1 hit while striking out 4.

Shawn O'Brien went 4-4 at the plate for the Elks, Steven Halcomb went 2-3, and Jordan Copeland added 2 hits for the Elks in the losing effort.

Game 2 of the series is slated to take place on Thursday, first pitch at 6:35.
