Can-American APEX Football proudly announces a plan with the Amateur Athletic Union to bring a series of football combines to Canada and the United States, hosted by some of the game's most accomplished coaches, players and front office personnel.
Founded by Bruce Cowdrey, who was an assistant coach on the Toronto Argos Grey Cup champions in the CFL in 1991, and today is a regional scout for the B.C. Lions, APEX Football will stage four camps in Canada for players aged 13-18 in July and August. Those camps are:
- Saturday, July 24 in Hamilton, Ontario, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
- Sunday, Aug. 15 in Kingston, Ontario, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Queen Elizabeth CVI.
- Sunday, Aug. 22 in Ottawa, Ontario, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Carleton University Field House.
- Sunday, Aug. 29 in Windsor, Ontario, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at University of Windsor Stadium.
Camp attendees must first register with the AAU (a $12 fee) at www.aausports.org. Go to the Sport pull down menu options and choose Flag Football. AAU membership includes accidental medical insurance that covers participants in APEX camps.
Then head to the APEX website, choose a camp, and follow sign-up instructions there.
Cowdrey has nine championship rings on his coaching resume. He is joined by former CFL coaches, GMs, ex-CFL players, former AFL and af2 coaches and collegiate coaches, many with ties to CFL and NFL coaches and teams today.
Joining Cowdrey on his Canada staff is Mike McCarthy, a longtime pro scout and former GM of the 1991 Toronto Grey Cup champions. McCarthy, who has scouted for the Patriots, Seahawks and Chargers of the NFL, also was president of the B.C. Lions and spent parts of 15 seasons with the CFL's Hamilton Tiger Cats in various capacities, including consultant to the GM.
Former CFL Winnipeg head coach Mike Kelly is on the Canada staff, too.
Camp participants will be videotaped as they are put through standard football combine measurables. They will also get individual positional instruction and team instruction through drills.
Among the staff for the U.S. camps later this fall are ex-AFL Colorado offensive coordinator Chris MacKeown, former Indiana State University head coach Dennis Raetz, ex-Northwestern University positions coach and current CFL Edmonton scout Lane Powell, and dozens more.
