New York, NY - The New York Titans of the National Lacrosse League franchise is declaring its home opener on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 pm against San Jose at Madison Square Garden as "Eli Appreciation Night."
To honor New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning who has lead his team to Super Bowl XLII against the New England Patriots, the Titans will grant free admission to all fans with the first name "Eli" or who wear a New York Giants Jersey with Manning's No. 10 number.
At 5:30pm on Thursday, just before the Titans' home opener which begins at 7:30pm, the team will host the First Annual Mayor's Cup FDNY-NYPD Indoor Lacrosse Challenge. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the PBA Widows & Children's Fund and the FF Thomas R. Elsasser Fund.
"The Titans have brought a lot of historic firsts to the Garden over the past year," said Titans COO Timothy Kelly. "The Titans' inaugural 2007 season home opener was the first ever lacrosse game played at the Garden, the Titans hosted the first ever collegiate lacrosse match when NYU took on Columbia at the Garden last season and on January 31st, 2008, the Titans will host the first ever FDNY-NYPD lacrosse match at the World's Most Famous Arena."
As part of the Mayor's Cup, the Titans will proudly award the Most Valuable Player of the game with the Police Officer Ronald Kloepfer MVP plaque. Kloepfer, along with the Patrolman's Benevolent Association, formed the NYPD lacrosse team in 1997. He passed away on September 11, 2001, but has left a lasting legacy with the NYPD lacrosse squad.
Immediately following the Mayor's Cup game, the Titans will take on the San Jose Stealth in their 2008 season home opener at 7:30pm. The last time the New York Titans played the San Jose Stealth at home on February 24, 2007, the Titans suffered an emotional 12-11 loss and ignited an instant rivalry. Both teams played a physical game and saw star players sit for lengthy stretches of time in the penalty box. Titans stars Casey Powell and Ryan Boyle, more known for their finesse than their aggressive play sat for a combined 25 minutes in the box. The Titans will be looking to avenge that loss in the 2008 home opener on January 31st.
The Titans enter their home opener at the Garden with a 1-2 record, opening their season with a win on the road in Portland on January 12th. The Titans have dropped the last two games on the road in Buffalo on January 19th and against the Rock in Toronto on January 26th.
The rock band "Bang Camaro," one of the top American buzz bands, will also perform during the Titans warm-up and again at half-time. Bang Camaro, a five-piece band with up to 20 lead singers belting out their unique blend of 'dude powered' rock that has "redefined metal," according to Rolling Stone magazine.
