Elex Reed Named Russell Athletic Lineman Of The Year
August 16, 2007 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings' DL ELEX REED has been named the 2007 Russell Athletic Lineman of the Year, as selected by a vote of arenafootball2 head coaches and members of the media.
Reed, a rookie from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, made an immediate impact for the Battle Wings in 2007. Reed was a big reason behind Bossier-Shreveport's best regular season finish ever at 11-5. He completed the year with a league-best 25.0 tackles for loss and also ranked second overall with 17.5 sacks. On top of that, Reed added 37.5 tackles, forced three fumbles and blocked two kicks for Bossier-Shreveport to help propel the team to its first-ever playoff berth.
Reed's best game of 2007 came on April 14 against the Texas Copperheads. On that special day, he brought down the quarterback an amazing six times to set a new af2 single-game record. The previous record (5.0) was set by OL/DL ASA FRANCIS of the Quad City Steamwheelers on June 28, 2003 against Hawaii. For Reed's outstanding effort against Texas, he was named ADT Defensive Player of the Week. In total, Reed had four games during the regular season in which he brought down the opposing quarterback at least two times. Earlier this week, Reed was named as a National Conference First Team All-af2 player.
Reed has continued to play well in the 2007 ArenaCup playoffs. In a first round showdown with the Arkansas Twisters, Reed set a single-game playoff record with 3.5 sacks. He also forced two fumbles and recovered one in the win. Reed was named ADT Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career.
The 2007 ArenaCup playoffs continue this weekend with the American and National Conference Championship games on Saturday, August 18. The National Conference Championship will feature the Central Division Champion Tulsa Talons playing host to Elex Reed and the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings at 8:00 EST.
