San Diego Riptide News Release
SAN DIEGO -- The Riptide named 12 high school football players Ironman of the Week in 2002, eleven of them have received post-season accolades as being the best in the county. In addition, two players were named the Players of the Year in their respective leagues and one was named All-League on both offense and defense.
During this past high school football season, the San Diego Riptide arenafootball2 team began giving a weekly award to the best two-way performances in San Diego county. Since the Riptide play Ironman football, where six of the eight players have to play both sides of the ball and special teams, it was a natural for the team to honor these special student-athletes because once they reach college, they will more than likely never play both sides of the ball again as they will have to switch to just one position.
The Ironman winners received a certificate presented by Riptide Head Coach Cree Morris and will be honored proir to a 2003 Riptide home game with their entire varsity football team. At that game, the Riptide will present a trophy to the Ironman of the Year (which will be named later).
Alex Peltier from Santa Fe Christian was named the Coastal League's Offensive Player of the Year and Mickey Pimentel from Marian Catholic earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in the South Bay. Mount Migel's Dewayne Ary was the lone Ironman award winner to be named All-League in both offense (First Team) and defense (Second Team).
