Edmonton Capitals Season Recap

September 7, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - Team members of the Edmonton Capitals packed up their belongings from TELUS Field and left for home today. After four games in the Northern Division playoffs against the Calgary Vipers, the Caps ended up losing the series 3-1, ending their 2009 season.

This year has been filled with many highlights that have made the inaugural season of the Edmonton Capitals a huge success. The season started with a bang with over 6 000 fans in attendance for the Edmonton Capitals season opener.Edmonton fans proved to be the best in the league, not only in their support for the team, but in many community related events. Over 250 dogs attended Bark in the Park with their owners, raising funds for the Edmonton Humane Society. Hundreds of Capitals fans came out all night long and helped throw pitches to break the world record number of pitches thrown before a game, in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The season ended off with Military Appreciation Day, where Capitals fans donated their tickets to members and families of the Canadian Military.

The Caps had many highlights on the field including great seasons by two veterans. Darryl Brinkley was the star at the plate leading the Golden Baseball League with 82 runs batted in. He led the Caps in at- bats, hits, home runs, stolen bases, and RBI. Brinkley's two biggest accomplishments of the year were reaching 1000 career RBI and hitting a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth at Home Run Hooky; a day when over 3000 school children were treated to a day at the ballpark by Edmonton businesses.

"Making the playoffs in our first year was great and seeing the crowds that came to cheer for us," Darryl Brinkley explained when asked about highlights from this season, "Individually, I had the most RBI and home runs I have ever had. For someone who hasn't hit third in the lineup for a few years, it felt really good."

On the mound, the Capitals were lead all season by Sherwood Park resident Lou Pote. The former major leaguer won a team high nine games and proved to be a fan favourite.

"It was great to see fans back in the stadium. That was the biggest positive." Lou Pote shared when talking about the positives of the season, "Everywhere we went, we heard about the Capitals."

The Capitals also made a splash with the acquisition of former major league all star, Jose Lima. Lima brought his trademark antics north of the border, thrilling the fans each time out. Perhaps the best single game performance was on July 22 when Edmonton native Mike Johnson pitched the first complete game shutout in franchise history against the Calgary Vipers. The Canadian Olympian won the game 9-0 and allowed only three Viper hits.
