Fresno Grizzlies News Release

FRESNO, CA - The Edison High School baseball team, winner of the CIF Central Section Division II Championship, has been chosen for the Fresno Grizzlies Team of the Year Award. The honor, along with four other awards, will be handed out at the 49th Annual Hot Stove Banquet on Thursday, February 4th at the Holiday Inn Downtown Fresno.

The Tigers' season got off to a rocky start, as they dropped five of their first six and eight of their first 12 games. However, Edison rebounded to win 18 of its final 21 contests, including its last 10 games of the season. The team's final victory, an 11-6 triumph over San Joaquin Memorial, earned the Tigers the CIF Central Section Division II crown, the first baseball title in the school's 84-year history.

Under head coach Cliff Rold, the Edison offense hit.349 as a team, averaging 7.6 runs per game on the season. They increased that production to 11.7 runs per game over their final 10 victories, racking up an average margin of victory of 8.5 runs over that stretch.

The team was led by one of its bright stars, center fielder Marquise Cooper, who batted.454 and stole 34 bases in just 33 games. The talented multi-sport athlete was selected by the Florida Marlins in the third round of the First Year Player Draft last June.

The nominees for Coach of the Year, Female Player of the Year and Male Player of the Year as well as the winner of the 2010 Al Radka Award will be released later this week.

The Fresno Grizzlies Hot Stove Banquet will also feature top Giants prospect Buster Posey, former Giants pitchers Dave Dravecky and Mark Gardner, and 2010 Grizzlies manager Steve Decker. Tickets for the event, which benefits the Fresno Grizzlies Community Fund, are $60 for adults, $30 for children, and $550 to reserve a table of 10.
