Edge's Dowdell Named CPIFL Offensive Player of the Year

A record-setting performance has earned the Bloomington Edge quarterback the season's top offensive award from the Champions Professional Indoor Football League.

Charles Dowdell received the 2014 CPIFL Offensive Player of the Year honor today. Dowdell guided the Edge passing attack for 2,416 yards, crushing the previous record by 465 yards. His 43 passing touchdowns is second in league history. Dowdell added 306 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.

Dowdell returned to the Edge this season after playing in Bloomington in 2012, when he started the season at quarterback but later shifted to wide receiver. Dowdell began his indoor football career at Saginaw in 2011 after completing his college action at Saginaw Valley State, then went to Green Bay in 2013 before returning to Bloomington this season.

Edge wide receiver and return specialist LaVaughn Macon also received league honors as he was given honorable mention status on special teams. Macon returned 70 kicks for 1,306 yards and one touchdown, averaging 18.7 yards per return. Macon also caught 40 passes for 465 yards and eight touchdowns.

In other CPIFL end-of-season awards announced today, Rocky Hinds of Wichita was named Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive Rookie of Year went to Meshak Williams of Salina, Frederick Bruno of Sioux City received Special Teams Player of the Year, Dominique Carson of Dodge City was named Offensive Rookie of the Year and Erv Strohbeen of the Sioux City Bandits was selected as Coach of the Year.

The CPIFL semifinals will be played this Saturday as top seed Wichita hosts Dodge City and Salina visits Sioux City.
