St. John's Edge News Release
St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge were victorious in their first meeting of the season with the expansion Sudbury Five by a score of 118-98 at Mile One Centre on Tuesday night.
The match-up on paper was one where both teams had a chance to come out on top, it was expected that this game would be a nail-biter right until the final minutes. However, it was not. The Edge took control early in the game opening the first quarter on a 6-0 run and continuing to push to take a 10-point lead into the second quarter where they continued the onslaught. At the half, the Edge were in the lead by 17 points and Sudbury would have to answer early in the second half to try and make a comeback (which they did earlier in the season against the Windsor Express). On this night the comeback was not to be, as the St. John's Edge would stretch their lead to as big as 30 points in the fourth quarter.
On the night the Edge shot 42% from three-point range and 46% from the field. The key's in tonight's win seemed to be limiting the leading scorer in the league, Braylon Rayson, and boxing out the league's leading rebounder, Grandy Glaze. The Edge played relentless defense all night, holding Sudbury below 100 points for just the second time all season. In the post, Grandy Glaze was met by Keith Wright Jr. and Glen 'Big Baby' Davis who played tough and did not give an inch when Glaze tried to make his way to the hoop.
The offence for the Edge was led for the second game in a row by Dez Lee. Lee dropped 26 points to go along with 6 rebounds in the 20-point win on Tuesday night. The Edge had eight players score in double digits. On the boards, Obie Oleka pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds to record his second double-double in just a handful of games. Keith Wright Jr. also recorded a double-double for the Edge, with 10 points and 11 rebounds. While Glen 'Big Baby' Davis dropped 10 points of his own, on a night that saw him play extended minutes in comparison to his first two games with the team.
These teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7:00 pm at Mile One Centre, which will mark the St. John's Edge final game of the 2018 calendar year as they will have a short break before hitting the road.
