St. John's Edge News Release

St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge kicked off their 8-game homestand this afternoon at Mile One Centre against the Cape Breton Highlanders. As they had done, three times previous, the Edge were victorious in this one by a score of 105-84.

The Edge looked to make this a fresh start after they had dropped their last four games on the road. The team had been non-stop with practices every day during the week to prepare for this series with Cape Breton.

Their preparation was evident from the early going. The Edge would jump out to a quick 9-point lead, which was due in part to the inside presence of Glen 'Big Baby' Davis and the three-point shooting of Dez Lee and capped off by Jarryn Skeete. The key to this one was going to be the Edge outlasting a Cape Breton team that were short staffed with a couple of players sidelined. A Murphy Burnatowski bucket in the last few seconds of the quarter would put the Edge in front by a score of 25-16.

Into the second quarter, it was highlighted by some good defence by the Edge, they would shut down the Highlanders shooters mid-way through the quarter. Every time a pass would go through the lane it would be tipped, deflected, or picked off and inside the rim protectors were out in full force as Murphy Burnatowski and Shaquille Keith would turn away a couple of Cape Breton's attempts on the inside. The Highlanders would hold their ground in the quarter as the Edge struggled as a team missing some open looks, but able to hold the lead and send it to the break with a 50-43 lead.

Coming out of the break the Edge looked refreshed and ready to play, while on the other side of the floor, the Highlanders looked as if the fast-pace was catching up to them. A quick 6-0 run to start the quarter by the Edge would be big as they were able to also get stops on defence and extend their lead as the game progressed. Two unlikely players would step up and make some impact plays late in the third for the Edge as Satnam Singh would convert on a couple of attempts down low, showing off his shooting touch in the process. Isaiah Tate II would hit a three in transition to push the lead to 13 as we neared the final frame. St. John's would end the quarter up 71-58 with 12 minutes left to play.

On his Birthday, Dez Lee would be a factor in the fourth to close this one out for the Edge as he led the quarter off by burying a triple from the top of the key, then proceed to knock down a corner three mid-way through. With the Edge playing tough defence and the bench contributing on almost every play, they would go on to take this one 105-84.

On the afternoon the Edge had 5 players who scored in double-digits and every player that was dressed contributed at least a point. The leader offensively for the Edge in this one was Dez Lee who dropped a game-high 18 points.

Following Dez, Glen Davis would have 16 points, Isaiah Tate II with 13, and newcomer Murphy Burnatowski would drop 13 in his debut. Burnatowski showed the fans that he was a great addition as he contributed beyond the arc, in the paint, and defensively recording 5 blocks and picking up 6 rebounds in the win.

For the Highlanders, they were led by Devin Sweetney who dropped 18 points in the loss.

These two teams are back at it again on Monday night at 7:00 PM at Mile One Centre. Be sure to grab your tickets by calling 576-7657, online at www.sjedge.ca, or by visiting the Mile One Centre box office.
