Edge Re-Sign Defensive Stalwarts
October 4, 2016 - Champions Indoor Football (CIF)
Bloomington Edge News Release
Bloomington, IL - In the first player transactions he's made as an indoor football head coach, Edge coach Ameer Ismail has re-signed three players that helped create one of Champion Indoor Football's top defensive units with last year's conference runner-up squad: linebacker Dontae McCoy, defensive lineman Christian Lacey, and defensive back Mike McGee.
"McCoy is definitely a great leader both on and off the field. We share the same passion for the game and he'll be instrumental for a championship run," Ismail stated when discussing the players re-signed for 2017. "Lacey is a great young athlete with unlimited potential and I can't wait to have him back flying around of defense. McGee is someone who I've had the experience to play with when he was younger. I expect him to lead the secondary and perform at a very high level as I know that's what he expects of himself. It's great to have him back."
McCoy (6'0, 230 - Illinois State) finished his rookie indoor football campaign near the top of many defensive statistical categories. The first-year linebacker finished with 102 tackles, third highest in the CIF. McCoy also finished with a league-high four fumble recoveries. Prior to joining the Edge last season, McCoy was strong safety at Illinois State University, where he recorded 160 tackles, three sacks, and one interception through a four-year career with the Redbirds.
"I just want to thank God for being blessing me enough to have the opportunity to re-sign with a great organization like that Bloomington Edge," McCoy stated. "I'm looking forward to getting the season started and bringing home a championship for this great town and organization this season."
Appearing in every game for the Edge during his rookie season, Lacey (6'1, 245 - Louisiana Tech) notched 42 tackles and three and a half sacks. He finished second on the team with eight tackles for loss.
"It feels good to be back for another season," said Lacey. "I'm looking forward to helping this team get to where we want to be and build on what we achieved last season."
The upcoming season will be McGee's fourth season playing indoor football, every season suiting up for the Edge. In five games played last season, McGee (6'0, 190 - Southern Mississippi) made 29 stops while adding one fumble recovery and one interception.
"It feels great to join the Bloomington Edge family again," McGee reflected. "I have great confidence that 2017 is our season for redemption!"
