St. John's Edge News Release

St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge dropped the first of two games against the KW Titans on Tuesday night by a score of 123-109.

This is one of the more crucial matchups as all teams head down the home stretch of the regular season. For the Titans, this was a must-win and for the Edge, this was just as important as they try and hold on to the top spot in the division and claim home-court advantage through the first two rounds of the 2019 Playoffs.

As expected, this one was tightly contested through the first few minutes. Murphy Burnatowski was solid to start, connecting on a mid-range jumper then on a triple to give the Edge a slight lead midway through the quarter.

Following a Titans basket, Jarryn Skeete would nail two-straight three-pointers to put the Edge back out in front. After the Edge turned up the pace and extended their lead, the Titans would have the last basket of the quarter, but the Edge were still in control leading 33-25 after the first.

The second would open with a little run by the Titans who would climb back within a single basket at the 10:29 mark of the quarter. The Edge would answer back with Isaiah Tate II and Olu Ashaolu combining for the team's next 8 points to increase the gap.

Newcomer Tra-Deon Hollins would get in on the action to put the Edge up by 10 with 6:24 remaining in the half. However, the Titans would fight their way back and with the Edge up just 1 with 3 seconds left, Damon Lynn would hit a triple to give the Titans the lead going into the half at 61-59.

With just 24 minutes to play in this one, both teams played with a chip on their shoulder coming out of the break. The Edge would put together a 7-0 run with just over 7 minutes remaining in the quarter. With the momentum shifting to the home side, the lead would balloon to 11, capped off by an Olu Ashaolu dunk. St. John's would head into the final quarter up 92-84.

In the final frame, the Titans were going to have to bring everything they had to stay alive in the playoff race. Tramar Sutherland would start the quarter on fire, converting multiple possessions in a row to bring his team within 1 point with just over 5 minutes to go.

At the 4:04 mark the Titans would complete the comeback and take their first lead since the beginning of the third quarter. Following a timeout, Olu Ashaolu would convert a layup attempt to put the Edge back in front. This would be the final basket on the night for the Edge as Ashton Smith would answer with two deep triples, then Tramar Sutherland would convert on a layup late as the Titans completed the comeback and walked away with the 123-109 win.

As a team, the Edge would shoot 43.7% from the floor and 34.1% from beyond the arc. Olu Ashaolu would lead the way offensively dropping 29 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. He was one of five Edge players who scored in double digits on this night.

For the Titans, they got 58 points from their bench, led by Tramar Sutherland with a game-high 32 points in the win.

These two teams will battle once again, tomorrow night at 7:00 PM at Mile One Centre. Be sure to get your tickets by visiting the Mile One Centre Box Office, by calling 576-7657, or online at www.mileoncentre.com.
