
Edge Drop Opener 50-34 at Chicago Slaughter

Chicago, IL, 2/19/12 - The Bloomington Edge, presented by Heller Stores, fell 50-34 at the Chicago Slaughter in their first game of the season. Dusty Burk threw for 236 yards and 4 touchdowns, completing 21 of 34 passes. Ricardo Lenhart led the team in receiving yards with 84 on 5 attempts and scored 2 touchdowns. John Cooper had 47 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. Andre Raymond and Mike McGee each rushed for 3 yards.
The Edge were able to come out and get an early lead in the game on a passing touchdown to Ricardo Lenhart. The PAT was missed so Bloomington only held a 6-0 lead. Not long after Chicago scored a rushing touchdown and like the Edge, the missed the PAT. The Slaughter came out with the next score, a passing touchdown, but Ricardo Lenhart scored another touchdown for the Edge to tie it 13-13. Thanks to a missed Chicago field goal attempt, that is how the quarter would end.
Chicago came out with the first score of the 2nd, a passing touchdown, but the Edge hung in there with a 57 yard field goal. Chicago opened up their lead with a 30 yard field goal and a rushing touchdown.
With only seconds remaining in the half John Cooper scored a receiving touchdown for Bloomington to make it a seven point game. After a good return Chicago was able to score another touchdown as time ran out. Chicago led 37-23 going to halftime.
Defense was the story of the 3rd quarter as Terry Barney got the Edge a fumble recovery and James Temple had an interception. Pete Christofilakos kicked a 43 yard field goal to bring score to 37-26 with Chicago still leading.
In the final quarter the Slaughter padded their lead with two rushing touchdowns. They missed the extra point on the second, but it did not matter in the end. John Cooper caught his second touchdown of the game for Bloomington and the Edge converted the two-point attempt, but they could not comeback from the big deficit.
Next Sunday (Feb. 26) the Edge play their home opener at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. They will take on the Reading Express at 3:05 pm. The game will be the first of the season for Reading. For more information on the Edge visit bloomingtonedge.com and the IFL at goifl.com.
