St. John's Edge News Release
St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge dropped their first meeting of the season with the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans on Saturday night by a score of 117-105 at The Aud in Kitchener, ON.
The game started on a familiar note for the Edge as Glen 'Big Baby' Davis would get the scoring going early, but that would be the lone highlight early on as the KW Titans would be converting from every spot beyond the three-point line in the first quarter. The Titans would go 11-for-14 from beyond the arc, good for 78.6%. Even with the sharpshooting by their opponent, the Edge would stay the course offensively and not try and deviate from the game plan set out. Some key buckets down the stretch would help with closing a large deficit, the Edge would trail 40-25 after one-quarter of play.
At the start of the second, the Edge would find a little bit of rhythm and close the deficit to just 6 points with 8 minutes to go in the half. Following another barrage of Titan triple's, the Edge would get some contributions off the bench from Shaquille Keith and then follow up with a Dez Lee three-pointer to again close the gap in the late stages of the half. With Dez Lee accounting for the final 4 points in the quarter for the Edge. The Titans had 16 three-pointers drop for them in the first half, leading the Edge 64-51 going into the break.
Coming out of the break, we can assume the words within the dressing room had to do with limiting the three-point attempts by the opponent and to attack offensively because that was exactly what the Edge did in this quarter. Glen 'Big Baby' Davis would go on a 6-0 run himself to get the Edge back into this one early in the second half. Although it seemed like the Titans were in control of this one for the majority of the game, the Edge would pull within 6 points with just under 6 minutes to go. Following an exchange of baskets by both teams, the Edge would cap off a little run with a Shaquille Keith layup, followed by a Glen Davis bucket to bring them within just two possessions. Turnovers would be the killer late in the quarter for the Edge as the Titans pulled the momentum back to their side to head into the fourth quarter with a 90-79 lead.
Into the final twelve minutes, the Edge would be looking to their starting five to turn the tide and grab their first lead since the first few seconds of this one, but it would be the Titans who went a little run to start the quarter. St. John's would find themselves down by 20 with around 6:20 left to play. The "never say die" attitude of Junior Cadougan would keep the Edge in this one even when it felt like they had lost control. Cadougan and Glen Davis would combine for 18 points in the final quarter. However, at the 3: 00-minute mark, Akeem Ellis of the Titans would hit a prayer three-pointer as the shot clock expired, this would prove to be a crucial make as the Edge would be mounting a comeback at this point after they had just stopped the Titans on the last possession. In the end, the Titans would come out victorious over the Edge by a final score of 117-105.
On this night, the Edge were led by Glen 'Big Baby' Davis and Junior Cadougan who both dropped 24 points. Diego Kapelan would knock down his shots to record 16 points, while Dez Lee and Shaquille Keith would both finish with 14. The Edge shot 50% from the field as a team and just 36.4% from three-point range.
For the Titans, they were led by Damon Lynn who dropped a game-high 34 points in the win. As a team, the Titans shot 20-for-37 from three-point range, good for 54%.
The team will now have a day for travel tomorrow, then head up north to visit the Sudbury Five. The Edge leads the season series with the Five 2-0, with both wins coming at Mile One Centre in December. You can catch the action on www.nblclive.ca.
