St. John's Edge News Release

St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge battled the Island Storm on Sunday afternoon at Mile One Centre, with the Edge coming out on top again by a score of 123-116. It was another game that saw the Edge claim a lead early, aside from a few short bursts from the Island Storm, were able to hold on at the end for the win.

The first half was a tightly contested match-up which saw the Edge shooting the lights out of Mile One Centre. The team was a combined 49.9% from behind the arc through the first half of action with Diego Kapelan leading the way through two quarters and finishing with a total of 19 points on the night.

The Island Storm were able to hold a small lead going into the half, but it was erased quickly in the third quarter as the St. John's Edge surged and would outscore the Storm 38-24 in the quarter. As the game made it to the final quarter of action, the Island Storm made a similar push to Friday night where they would trim the Edge lead to just a couple of points. However, in the end St. John's were able to rely on consistency from the outside, shooting a 50% from the field on 40-for-80 shooting, and down low to hold on for the 7-point win and make that their first back-to-back wins on the year.

For the Edge on this night, Dez Lee was the showman of the night. The 6'5" combo guard put up 31 points to lead all scorers, while pulling down 6 rebounds. Lee has been a consistent performer for the Edge early in the season and has not slowed down. The team also had a big contribution from Carl English who put up a season high 23 points, going 7-for-12 from three-point land. Also, in double digits for the Edge on this night were Maurice Jones Sr. (19 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds), Diego Kapelan (19 points, 5-for-9 from behind the arc) and Obie Oleka (12 points, 7 rebounds).

The Island Storm got another good performance from Sampson Carter who dropped 28 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in the loss. Another key factor all night for the storm was Russell Byrd who continues to add to his season average in points per game as he put up 25 points on 4-for-7 shooting. However, for Byrd, it was also a night where foul trouble kept him out for the last 3 minutes of the game as he fouled out.

These two teams both shot over 40% from three-point range, with St. John's having the upper hand. This series was a turnaround for the Edge as they will look to build on this success and carry it over when the Sudbury Five come to town on Tuesday, December 18th and Wednesday, December 19th. These games are also Student Night's, with a valid student ID you can purchase your tickets for just $10.00 at the box office.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Mile One Box Office, by calling 576-7657, or online at mileonecentre.com.
