St. John's Edge News Release
St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge fell to the Moncton Magic by a score of 109-102 on Tuesday night at the Avenir Centre in Moncton, NB.
From the get-go, the Edge were looking to rebound from a Sunday afternoon loss to Halifax. They were able to get off to a quick start in this one and put the Magic back on their heels. After some key stops, Moncton were able to recover from the slow start and get back into this one with an 8-0 run with around 5 minutes left in the first quarter. The Edge struggled to find their stroke from beyond the arc in the first, going just 1-for-8. In this quarter, the Edge also lost Glen Davis who left the floor due to an injury after some contact down low. Davis would not return to the lineup, meaning Brad States and Olu Ashaolu would see some additional minutes throughout this one.
Into the second quarter, the Edge trailed the Magic by 9. The team would start the quarter off on the right foot again with Junior Cadougan leading the way to bring the Edge back within a couple of possessions at the 10-minute mark of the quarter. After a few stops by the Magic, they would extend their lead to 11 and look to keep the pressure on the Edge. Following a Jared Nickens jump shot, Moncton would respond late in the quarter and push their lead to 15 going into the break (58-43).
Coming out of the half, the Edge looked poised to get back into this one and began to find their shot from three-point range. St. John's would go on a 17-5 run with Isaiah Tate II, Olu Ashaolu, and Diego Kapelan burying their jumpers from the outside with the run being capped off by an Obie Oleka slam forcing Moncton to call a quick timeout. The Edge had climbed back into this one and tied it up on an Isaiah Tate II triple with 8 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Following some back and forth in the action, Moncton seemed to have grabbed the momentum from the Edge as they widened their lead to 8 points at the end of the third (88-80).
With just 12 minutes left in this one, it was going to take a full team effort to try and avoid dropping their second game in a row. Junior Cadougan continued to lead the way, finding his way to the hoop on multiple occasions to draw fouls and convert on his attempts. The supporting cast of Dez Lee and Obie Oleka would get in on the action to help out Cadougan's efforts. At the 4:29 mark of the fourth quarter it looked like we may see this one go down to the wire, as the Edge trailed 97-96. Following an exchange of buckets by both teams, the Magic made some key stops and were able to corral a loose ball on the offensive end late to put this one to bed by a score of 109-102.
The Story in this one was the outstanding effort and play of Junior Cadougan who was a catalyst for the offence. Cadougan would lead all scorers on the night dropping 32 points in the loss. As a team the Edge had 6 players finish in double digits, with newcomers Isaiah Tate II and Olu Ashaolu combining for 21 points off the bench. Down low, Obie Oleka picked up another double-double pulling down 13 rebounds to go along with 14 points.
For the Magic, they were led by Trey Kell who dropped 24 points off the bench and pulled down 12 rebounds.
St. John's will now travel to Saint John to face the Riptide as they look to finish up their road trip on a winning note. The team is now 2-2 over the first four games of the trip and will be looking to gain some momentum before returning to Mile One Centre on Friday night as they welcome the Windsor Express.
