Eddies Gain Navarro from Transfer Deal
July 12, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB (July 12, 2014) - FC Edmonton announce today the signing of defender Alberto Navarro. As per club policy, the details of the contract or the player transfer are not disclosed.
"Navarro is a very good signing for us," said FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller. "He is an experienced NASL defender and comes very highly recommended. He will be a really good addition to the group and has already settled in very nicely."
FC Edmonton recently acquired Navarro from fellow North American Soccer League (NASL) side Atlanta Silverbacks on a transfer. Navarro, 25, had been a staple in the Silverbacks lineup over the better part of the last three seasons, making a total of 40 appearances for the club since 2012. The Delano, Calif. native found first-team time harder to come by this year, appearing in just three league games during the NASL Spring Season. He did have a hand in the Silverbacks' historic Cup run, starting in all three of the team's games against Major League Soccer (MLS) opposition.
"I'd like to thank FC Edmonton for brining me in and trusting in me," said centre-back Navarro. "I'm excited to get this fall season started and to let the fans know that I'm here to work hard. I want to win and that's why I'm here."
Navarro will be reunited with a few familiar faces. Former Silverbacks midfielders Milton Blanco and Horace James, who both spent significant time playing alongside Navarro in Atlanta, joined FC Edmonton in the 2014 offseason. Navarro joins a stout defensive unit as Miller's side had one of the lowest goals against totals in the league during the Spring Season.
FC Edmonton fans will have a chance to see Navarro and the rest of the Eddies in action on Sunday, July 13 when FC Edmonton plays Ottawa Fury FC (4 p.m. MT KO). The match, presented by West Edmonton Mall, will be played at Commonwealth Stadium to accommodate a delay in the Clarke field turf installation. The match will also be broadcast live on City TV Edmonton. Tickets start at just $10 in the YMCA Family Fun Zone and are available at all Edmonton YMCA locations. All other tickets can be purchased at www.fcedmonton.com or by calling 780.700.2600.
