FC Edmonton News Release

EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton (2W-3D-4L) faced Tampa Bay Rowdies (4W-4D-1L) in Week 10 of North American Soccer League (NASL) action, dropping a 2-1 decision, June 6 at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, FL. Edmonton was unable to complete the comeback after going down a pair of goals.

Tampa Bay's Darwin Espinal opened up scoring in the match while teammate Brian Shriver collected the Rowdies game-winning goal. The Eddies found their second-half goal from midfielder Lance Laing.

Side-effects of a torrential downpour were evident throughout the 90 minutes of play on Saturday night. Players on both sides of the pitch were caught off-guard as routine passes and plays failed to connect due to the wet conditions.

Tampa Bay broke through with the matches' opening goal of the game on 37 minutes. Former Eddie Cory Hertzog's shot was saved by goalkeeper John Smits before Espinal took advantage of confusion in Edmonton's box to put the home side up 1-0, a score that would carry into the break.

After a positive start to the second half for Edmonton, it was instead Tampa Bay who registered the matches' second goal on 60 minutes. After being awarded a free kick in the attacking third, a rebound off Smits found Shriver just outside the box, who then fired 20-yard blast to the top-left of the net.

Edmonton got a goal back five minutes later, as Jamaican international Laing was given what seemed like an endless amount of time to work the ball at the top of the box. Laing found his spot and delivered a curling right-footed shot that sailed past 'keeper Matt Pickens to bring the Eddies within one. Unfortunately a comeback was not in the works for the visiting side, who were unable to find the match-tying goal in the remaining 25 minutes of the half.

"I commend our guys for in particular the second half," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller remarked following the match. "We finished the stronger team, we were chasing the game and getting after it. I said to to the guys that we've got to show that energy and commitment in the first half as well and if we do that we'll be competitive in this league. I was very disappointed here tonight, I thought the way the game finished we could have got a draw out of it."
