
Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the week ending September 6th:
New Britain Rock Cats outfielder Joe Benson has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of August 30th through September 6th. The 22-year old hit .423 (11-for-26) with one double, four home runs, nine runs scored, eight RBI, three stolen bases, six walks and a .923 slugging percentage in seven games last week. He reached base in all seven games he played in last week and had multiple hits in four of those seven games. The 6'2", 211 lb. slugger also scored multiple runs in three games and drove in multiple runs twice last week, including going 3-for-4 with two homers, three runs scored and two RBI in a 4-1 win against Trenton on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. Benson, who is a native of Hinsdale, Illinois, tied for first among all Eastern League players in home runs last week. He also finished the week among the leaders in slugging percentage (.923-2nd), OPS (1.454-2nd), batting average (.423-3rd), steals (3-tied 3rd), total bases (24-4th), on-base percentage (.531-4th), hits (11-tied 5th) and runs scored (9-tied 5th). Joe, who finished the season tied for fourth in the league in home runs (23) and triples (7), was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the second round of the 2006 draft out of Joliet Catholic Academy in Illinois.
Stephen Fife, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Portland Sea Dogs, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 30th through September 6th. The 6'3", 210 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the Sea Dogs last week and had a record of 2-0 with seven strikeouts and a 1.64 ERA. He made his first appearance of the week last Tuesday night against Binghamton and pitched six shutout innings to earn the win as Portland downed the B-Mets 6-0. He struck out five batters and did not issue a walk while surrendering just two hits. Fife, who is a native of Boise, Idaho, also earned the win in his second start of the week, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two batters over five innings of work in a 9-2 win against New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. The 23-year old made 26 starts with Portland this season and posted a record of 8-6 with a 4.75 ERA and 82 strikeouts over 136.1 innings of work. Stephen, who ranked first among all Sea Dogs pitchers in wins, games started and innings pitched this season, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the third round of the 2008 draft after going 7-5 with a 3.72 ERA in 15 starts during his junior season at the University of Utah.
