PIKEVILLE, KY. - Eastern Kentucky is no stranger to record-setting high school and college basketball. The area has produced numerous record-setters on the high school and collegiate levels. Sunday, Eastern Kentucky became home to several basketball records of the professional variety. Professional basketball has arrived in Eastern Kentucky. The East Kentucky Miners, playing in their first season as an expansion team in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), shattered several longtime league records, including most points scored in a game. East Kentucky established the records during a 194-115 win over visiting Atlanta.
Another expansion team, Atlanta struggled to keep up with an East Kentucky team that shot nearly 70-percent from the floor. The Miners blanked Atlanta 7-0 in the all-important quarter points category. The Anchorage Northern Knights defeated the Maine Lumberjacks 183-140 on February 19, 1979 to establish the previous CBA single-game scoring record.
"To break a record that has stood for 29 years is a remarkable feat," said East Kentucky Coach Kevin Keathley. "I couldn't be any happier for our players and fans. We're fortunate to have a great fanbase that is very supportive." East Kentucky established several new CBA records during the monumental win. The new CBA records set by the Miners included Most Points, Team (194); Most Points, Half (113); Most Points, Quarter (58) and Largest Margin of Victory (79).
Guard Mike Dean led East Kentucky in scoring with a game-high 44 points. Eight different Miners reached doubles figures scoring in the monumental regular-season home finale. CBA Player of the Year candidate Josh Pace scored 28 points, ranking as East Kentucky's second-leading scorer. James "Boo" Jackson turned in a double-double of 26 points and 20 rebounds for the Miners. Lawrence Barnes, playing out of a reserve role, provided 23 points for East Kentucky.
Jason McLeish joined Jackson in the double-double club, scoring 18 points and dishing off a career-high 16 assists. Daniel Price also netted 18 points for the host Miners. Steve Thomas provided a double-double performance of 12 points and 13 rebounds in East Kentucky's triumph. Mike Crain, hobbled by an injury in late-February, also netted a dozen points for the Miners.
East Kentucky held a commanding 42-12 lead over Atlanta at the conclusion of the opening quarter. The Miners packed an 83-46 lead into halftime and outscored the Krunk 58-33 in the third period.
Marcus Heard scored eight points for East Kentucky while Mark King, suiting up for his first Miners regular-season game, added five points. As a team, East Kentucky handed out 45 assists and pulled down 66 rebounds.
East Kentucky's scoring efforts on Sunday surpassed those set previously in many other professional basketball leagues, including the NBA. Detroit owns the NBA scoring record. The Pistons used three overtimes to post 186 points in a winning effort over Denver on December 13, 1983. Detroit defeated Denver 186-184 in the record-setting NBA game. Cleveland defeated Miami 148-80 on December 17, 1991 for the largest margin of victory (68 points) in NBA history.
East Kentucky is due to return to action on Thursday, March 6 in a regular-season finale versus host Minot. Tip-off for the East Kentucky-Minot American Conference game is set for 7:05 p.m.
