Quakes Get Go-Ahead on New Stadium From San Jose Planning Commission

The San Jose Planning Commission voted 6-0 to uphold the Earthquakes' Planned Development Permit on Wednesday night, Feb. 22, paving the way for the club to break ground on its new stadium at 1125 Coleman Avenue. The Earthquakes' PD Permit was initially consented for approval by city planners on Dec. 14, but was appealed by a Newhall Neighborhood Association member on Jan. 1. Fans clad in Earthquakes colors filled the council chambers to capacity. Owner Lew Wolff, Club President Dave Kaval and MLS President Mark Abbott spoke on behalf of the Quakes, among numerous community members and stakeholders, for over two hours before the commission closed discussion and took action on the appeal.

Earthquakes, Timbers Draw 1-1 in Portland Tournament Opener

The San Jose Earthquakes battled to a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers in their opener of a four-team tournament at JELD-WEN Field Monday night.

Portland got on the board first after Kalif Alhassan played a short corner to Diego Chara. Alhassan took the return pass and looped a shot to the far post for a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. San Jose equalized in the 59th minute as Hanyer Mosquera deflected in a cross from Chris Wondolowski for an own goal. Tressor Moreno created the initial attack after intercepting a pass in the attacking third before finding Wondolowski with a leading ball into the right side of the area.

The Quakes return to action on Thursday when they take on AIK (Sweden) at JELD-WEN Field. The match will kickoff at 5 p.m. PT and will be livestreamed at www.sjearthquakes.com .

Season Opener Less Than Two Weeks Away

The San Jose Earthquakes' 2012 season opener against the New England Revolution is now less than two weeks away, in just 12 days. Start time at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday night, March 10, is slated for 7:30 p.m. as part of MLS First Kick 2012, with the Quakes launching their fifth season since returning to MLS as an expansion franchise in 2008.

Earthquakes Announce Full 2012 Broadcast Schedule

The San Jose Earthquakes and Comcast SportsNet announced their most comprehensive regional television schedule in the team's history last week. Comcast SportsNet (CSN) will televise 29 Earthquakes games in 2012 in High Definition. With the five remaining games televised nationally, the Quakes will have all of their games on television in 2012 for the first time since the team returned to MLS in 2008. The club's broadcast team will consist of Jim Kozimor (play-by-play), Kelly Gray (color analyst) and Dan Dibley (sideline reporter) in the new season.

Opara Scores in 2-1 Win for U.S. U-23s

Earthquakes defender Ike Opara scored in a 2-1 win for the U.S. U-23s against FC Dallas on Feb. 22 at FC Dallas Stadium. Opara, in camp with the U.S. as head coach Caleb Porter works to finalize a roster ahead of CONCACAF Olympic qualifying in March, headed in a corner kick from Freddy Adu for a 1-1 tie in the 19th minute. The camp culminates with a friendly against Olympic hopefuls from Mexico on Feb. 29 at FC Dallas Stadium. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on Galavision.

Earthquakes Announce 2012 MLS Reserve League Schedule

The San Jose Earthquakes have announced their 10-game schedule for the 2012 MLS Reserve League. The Quakes will play five of those games at home, all slated for 11 a.m. starts at the Earthquakes Training Facility in San Jose. The reserves will open their season with a home match-up against the Portland Timbers on Tuesday, March 27, with subsequent home dates set for April 8, May 14, Aug. 12 and Sept. 4.

Earthquakes to Play Dynamo at AT&T Park on March 17

The Quakes have announced that the club will host the Houston Dynamo at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Saturday, March 17, as part of a doubleheader with Olympic hopefuls from Mexico and Senegal. The Earthquakes open the twin bill by taking on 2011 MLS Cup finalist Houston at 2 p.m., with Mexico taking on Senegal at 4:30 p.m. in a final tune-up before Olympic qualifying. 2012 Earthquakes Preseason Schedule

The Earthquakes travelled to Portland, Ore., on Feb. 26 for the third and final out-of-town segment of their preseason training camp. The team will participate in a four-team round-robin tournament in Portland. San Jose's tournament opener against the host Portland Timbers on Monday, Feb. 27, will be streamed live at www.portlandtimbers.com beginning at 7:30 p.m. PT. The Quakes will also take on Sweden's AIK on March 1 and Chivas USA on March 4.

All games will be held at JELD-WEN Field. Individual tickets for the tournament, which start at $10 per doubleheader session, are on sale at the JELD-WEN Field box office and area Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com, or by phone at (800) 745-3000. Quakes President David Kaval's Office Hours

Earthquakes President David Kaval's office hours continue during the preseason. Fans can drop by his office at 451 El Camino Real, Suite 220 in Santa Clara, Calif., on Tuesdays between 3 and 5 p.m. PT. Participants will be seen on a first come, first served basis.

Earthquakes Youth Academy Update

Academy U-16s, U-18s Idle

The Earthquakes U-16s and U-18s were both idle this past weekend. The two squads will return to action in Surrey, British Columbia, on Saturday, March 3, against Northwest Division foe Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
