San Jose Earthquakes News Release

Portland, Ore. - The San Jose Earthquakes picked up a clean sheet and won their Rose City Invitational opener 1-0 against the host Portland Timbers at Providence Park on Sunday.

The Earthquakes found the scoreboard in the 26th minute thanks to an own goal from Portland's Norberto Paparatto. Shea Salinas played a corner kick short to Sam Cronin, who whipped a cross toward the far post. Clarence Goodson won the ensuing header and nodded the ball across the goal face. Both Steven Lenhart and Paparatto rose for the ball, with the Argentinean ultimately knocking his attempted clearance into his own net.

Goalkeeper Jon Busch earned the shutout with seven saves for San Jose. The backline featured Victor Bernardez, Clarence Goodson and Jordan Stewart for a full 90 minutes while Brandon Barklage played 45 minutes in his first preseason game. Cordell Cato assumed Barklage's duties in the second half after spending the first half at right midfield.

The Earthquakes will continue Rose City Invitational action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Kickoff is 5 p.m. PT at Providence Park in Portland, Ore. with a livestream available at www.sjearthquakes.com. San Jose closes the preseason tournament on Saturday, March 1 against Portmore United of Jamaica at 2:30 p.m. PT.
