San Jose Earthquakes News Release
CHIGWELL, London - The San Jose Earthquakes completed a clean sweep of their three matches while in England, knocking off fellow MLS side Colorado Rapids 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Spurs Lodge in Chigwell. Ryan Johnson scored his second goal of the trip in the 10th minute and Quincy Amarikwa found the net in the 84th to secure the San Jose win.
San Jose took the lead at Spurs Lodge in the 10th minute when Arturo Alvarez played Ryan Johnson through. The Jamaican international muscled through a challenge by Julien Baudet, and lifted the ball over Colorado keeper Matt Pickens for the match opener.
The Rapids threatened to equalize in the 25th minute, as Johnson's fellow countrymen, Omar Cummings fought through a challenge to get a close range shot off inside the area. Joe Cannon was equal to the task, saving Cumming's effort with his legs.
Fifteen minutes later, San Jose looked to double their lead as Ramiro Corrales came forward out of the back as his long range effort went just high of Pickens' net.
In the 73rd minute, Colorado nearly leveled, as Jeff Larentowicz struck his free kick well from about 25 yards out, but Cannon came up large again, first saving the free kick, and then stopping the rebound as well from close range. Cannon made five saves on the day, and San Jose's defense earned their third successive clean sheet.
The Quakes came close to a second in the 81st as Cornell Glen created enough space for his left-footed effort from just inside the area, however, Pickens made the diving save to push it wide.
Substitute Quincy Amarikwa put in the second goal of the day, and the Quakes cemented their victory just three minutes later. Glen held possession, as Amarikwa made his run behind the defense. Glen played a perfectly timed and weighted ball through, and Amarikwa finished coolly against the oncoming Pickens.
The Earthquakes won all three matches while over in England, defeating West Ham United on Monday at Upton Park 2-0, Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at Spurs Lodge on Wednesday and Colorado today, 2-0 at Spurs Lodge. The Quakes return home from London on Sunday, after they take in the Tottenham Hotspur-Blackburn Rovers match on Saturday at White Hart Lane.
