Earthquakes Allow Two Late Goals To Fall 2-0 To The Red Bulls

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The San Jose Earthquakes fell 2-0 to the New York Red Bulls Sunday afternoon at Giants Stadium. Mike Magee scored a penalty kick with 11 minutes to go and Jozy Altidore netted a second in stoppage time to give the Red Bulls the win. The Quakes are now 1-3-0 on the season following the defeat.

Ivan Guerrero had the first chance for the Quakes in the opening 15 minutes. Kei Kamara received a throw-in from Ronnie O'Brien on the left wing and Kamara then slipped a pass behind the defense for Guerrero. He appeared to have an opening inside the box, but Chris Leitch recovered to knock the ball away from Guerrero to end the threat.

In the 38th minute, Nick Garcia provided the save of the half with a goal line clearance of a Claudio Reyna shot to keep the game scoreless. Reyna got a pass from John Wolyniec inside the box and hit a shot to the far post. Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon got a hand on the shot to slow it down and Garcia snuck in to clear the ball away just before it crossed the line.

The Red Bulls took the lead in the 79th minute from the penalty spot with a goal from Mike Magee. Wolyniec found Jozy Altidore with a through ball and Altidore broke in with Ryan Cochrane defending. Cochrane fouled Altidore right at the edge of the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Magee then blasted a shot past Cannon.

Moments later, Kamara had a chance to equalize for San Jose. James Riley found Ivan Guerrero on the wing and the Honduran international sent a cross into the box for Kamara, who pushed a header to the near post. Red Bulls goalkeeper Jon Conway dove to his right to make the save to preserve the 1-0 advantage.

Garcia cleared another ball off the line in the waning moments of the game on a header by Wolyniec. With the ball bouncing in the box, Wolyniec leapt and headed the ball past a charging Cannon, but Garcia got back to clear the ball away for a second time.

Altidore netted a goal in the final seconds of the match off a pass from Wolyniec to complete the scoring. Wolyniec received the ball in the box and laid it off to Altidore, who tapped a shot off the post and in for his second goal of the year.

The Earthquakes continue their road trip on Wednesday, Apr. 30 against Real Salt Lake in a U.S. Open Cup match. They face RSL at Rice Eccles Stadium at 6 p.m. PT in the Open Cup play-in game. The team then returns to the Bay Area next weekend to play the first game ever at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara. The Quakes host FC Dallas at 7 p.m. PT at the newly renovated stadium on Saturday, May 3. The game will also mark the first broadcast of the year on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. Frank Yallop, on game: "It was a bit of an off game for us. We didn't create as much as we would have liked going forward. However, we did have some success stopping them and the game seemed to be a bit of a stalemate. I thought we could have come out of the game with a tie, but a couple of plays at the end and that is the game."

Yallop, on second half: "At halftime, I told the guys we needed to be prepared to a get a clean sheet in the second half. We didn't seem to have enough to get the win today, but we need to come out of a game like this with a point."

Forward Peguero Jean Philippe, on first appearance: "It felt good to get out on the field again, but we lost the game, so it could have been better. We probably should have gotten a result tonight, but we have to move on and come out stronger next game."

Defender Ryan Cochrane, on game: "We probably didn't play well enough to get a win. The team didn't seem to have the killer instinct that we had last week, but we should have gotten a tie out of it. However, we have two more games this week so we have to bounce back quickly."

Cochrane, on team's mentality: "We needed to come in with a better mentality. It seemed like we came in looking for a tie. Last week, we showed well in Colorado, but we need to find some consistency and perform like that every week."

Defender Nick Garcia, on game: "On the road, you always want to get at least a point. We had played the Red Bulls in preseason and done quite well so we expected to play well tonight, but we came out slow. We didn't possess the ball well enough to create the chances we needed to win the game."
