
Earthquakes Acquire Goalkeeper Joe Cannon

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today the team has acquired goalkeeper Joe Cannon from Los Angeles Galaxy in exchange for partial allocation.
"Joe Cannon brings to the Earthquakes veteran leadership and solidifies our defense" stated John Doyle, General Manager of Soccer Operations of the San Jose Earthquakes.
"We are very excited to have Joe Cannon back in San Jose" stated Frank Yallop, Head Coach of the San Jose Earthquakes. "He has proven himself to be one of the top goalkeepers in the league."
During his nine years playing in MLS, Cannon has played 216 MLS regular season games and has a 1.30 goals against average. Cannon was part of the San Jose Earthquakes that won the MLS Cup title in 2001. A three-time MLS All-Star in 2001, 2002 and 2006, Cannon has been named twice the MLS Goalkeeper of the year.
Cannon spent the past year playing for Los Angeles Galaxy where he played alongside David Beckham and Landon Donovan. Cannon averaged 1.59 GAA. and made 119 saves with the Galaxy.
Before joining Los Angeles, the Bay Area native played for the Colorado Rapids from 2003 to 2006. In 2006 Cannon helped lead the Rapids back to the Western Conference Championship and was a finalist for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. The same year Cannon was named to the MLS All-Star team which defeated English Premier League champions Chelsea FC.
In 2005 Cannon played in 27 games, and collected a 10-12-4 record with eight shutouts. In 2004 Cannon was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and was a finalist for the Honda Most Valuable Player as he finished the year with a 10-9-11 record and a 1.07 GAA. He tallied a team record and career-high 10 shutouts and played all 90 minutes in all 30 of the Rapids' regular season games.
In 2003 Cannon returned to MLS, signing with the Colorado Rapids in August, after spending eight months with RC Lens of France's Ligue 1.
Cannon started his MLS career with the San Jose Earthquakes in 1999 and stayed with the team until 2002. The same year he played 26 games compiling 13-10-3 record and a 1.10 GAA. en route to winning his first MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award.
In 2001 Cannon started all 25 games in which he appeared, collecting 13 wins and a 1.09 GAA. in the regular season. Cannon was even better in the postseason, going 5-1 with a 0.49 GAA. to lead San Jose to its first MLS Cup title. The same year Cannon was named to the MLS All-Star team for the first time and was a finalist for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year for the first time.
In 2000 Cannon started all 26 games in which he appeared, tallying a 1.49 GAA. that was the fourth best in MLS.
In 1999 Cannon took the goalkeeper position for San Jose in June and played all 90 minutes in each of his team's final 18 games, finishing with a career-high 14 wins and a 1.33 GAA.
Cannon has appeared in two games for the U.S. Men's National Team and is yet to concede a goal in two halves of play. He made his National Team debut on June 8th, 2003 against New Zealand in Richmond, Va., replacing Marcus Hahnemann at halftime of a 2-1 U.S. win. Cannon returned to the National Team on March 19th, 2005, making his first career start against Honduras in Albuquerque, N.M. before being replaced by Kevin Hartman. He as been a part of a number of National Team camps since his last cap, but has not made an appearance.
