The Sacramento Sirens went up against an improved San Francisco StingRayz team at Capital Christian High School on Saturday, February 22, 2003 to take their first win of the new 2003 Spring Season. Just 3 weeks into the 2003 training camp, the Sirens tested out their outstanding offense and awesome defense to beat SF 47-26.
The 1st Quarter was all Sirens. Starting off on their 1st possession, the Sirens offense put up 6 points on a 37-yd run by #21 Running Back Hilary McLaughlin. After the StingRayz turnover on downs, the Sirens MVP Running Back #22 Julie "The Wicked" Wicher took the ball in on a 23-yd run for 6 more. Score at the end of the first was Sirens 12 - StingRayz 0.
At the beginning of the 2nd, the StingRayz came on with an 11-yd run by #22 Dakura Smith and tacked on a 2-pt conversion to bring the score to 12-8. The Sirens responded with another 2 TDs. First a 10-yd run by QB #2 Chantelle Powers with a PAT kick by #62 Nancy Stoner and then with a beautiful 74-yd run by Wicher for her 2nd TD of the day. Powers threw an interception on the Sirens next possession but the awesome Sirens defense put the pressure on and StingRayz failed to capitalize before the half leaving the score Sirens 25 â StingRayz 8.
Taking the kickoff in the 3rd, the StingRayz put a quick 6 on the board with another run by Smith who carried the ball 62-yds for the TD. Another Powers interception gave the StingRayz the opportunity to send Wide Receiver #8 Heather Bruno in for 6 more bringing the score to its closest point in the game. But the Sirens 2002 Rookie of the year, #23 Michelle Kahler moved the score up another 6 on a 28-yd run. A 2-pt conversion made the score at the end of the 3rd Quarter Sirens 33 â StingRayz 20.
The Sirens defense, lead by Sack Pack Award Winner #6 Tina "Taco" Rogers and Defensive MVP #59 "Diamond Lill" Jarrell, put the pressure on StingRayz QB #5 Renee Robinson in the last Quarter. Struggling on a long 8-minute possession, the StingRayz scored their last TD of the game on a 1-yd carry by Smith with 11:25 left in the 4th. Taking full advantage, the Sirens wrapped things up nicely with 2 additional TDs. Wicher carried in her 3rd. on a 36-yd run with a 2-pt conversion carried in by Powers. Powers also scored the last TD on an 8-yd Quarterback keeper for the last 6 points in the game.
FINAL SCORE: SIRENS 47- STINGRAYZ 26
