August 1, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Milwaukee Wave United News Release
Milwaukee, WI- Portland scored twice in the first nine minutes of the contest and it was all the Timbers needed to defeat Milwaukee Wave United 2-0 in an A-League match Saturday night (7/31) in front of 1,569 fans at Uihlein Soccer Park. The result improved Portland's record to 13-7-0 (39 points), elevating the Timbers into a first place tie with idle Vancouver in the Western Conference standings. Meanwhile, Milwaukee dropped to 8-9-3 (27 points) as Wave United remains one point behind Seattle in the battle for fourth place in the Western standings.
The Timbers opened the scoring when Byron Alvarez bagged his 10th of the season on a low shot from the top of the penalty area. Alvarez ran onto a touch from fellow forward Dan Antoniuk, who sent a nice back heel to Alvarez after taking a pass from Alex Bengard.
Bengard followed with his fourth goal of the campaign in the ninth minute to put the Timbers ahead 2-0. Again, it was Antoniuk redirecting a through ball to set up his teammate for a shot from the top of the box.
From that point on, goalkeeper Josh Saunders and the Portland defense held Milwaukee in check. Saunders registered both of his saves in the first half, stopping both Nick Walls and Chad Dombrowski on bids just inside the penalty area. Wave United's bid to get back in the game took a major blow when goalkeeper Jim Larkin was red-carded on hard tackle against Antoniuk in the 55th minute and Milwaukee's short-handed effort was not enough to produce any goals.
Saunders finished with two saves to record his fifth shutout of the season. It was also the fifth time that Milwaukee was shut out this season. Despite the loss, Wave United is still 7-2-2 in its last 11 outings.
Wave United continues its current home stand when it hosts the Calgary Mustangs this Friday, August 6, 7:35 PM at Uihlein Soccer Park.
