Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
LOVELAND, CO - Matt Glasser scored at 8:26 of overtime to give the Colorado Eagles a 3-2 victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in Game 1 of the Ray Miron President's Cup Finals Friday night at the Budweiser Events Center. Colorado now leads the best-of-seven series 1-0 going into Game 2 at 8:05 pm Central time tomorrow night.
The âBugs rallied from two separate one-goal deficits to force overtime in the contest, the last one coming when David Rutherford scored with just 3:20 left in regulation. Jeff Kyrzakos score the other goal for Bossier-Shreveport, who held the Eagles off the board on five powerplays while converting 1 out of 7 of their own.
The first 20 minutes served as a kind of feeling-out period as the Mudbugs and Eagles played head-to-head for the first time since January. Bossier-Shreveport skated to a 9-6 shot advantage and each team missed on one powerplay chance as the game stayed scoreless going into the second frame.
Colorado opened the scoring four minutes into the third when Riley Nelson grabbed the puck along the boards and quickly sent it across the slot, where it was tapped in by Daymen Rycroft. The âBugs tied it up later in the period on their fourth powerplay of the game when Kyle Jones stopped a Jamie Milam slapshot only to have Jeff Kyrzakos jam the rebound into the net at 11:35.
The Eagles went back on top early in the third as Riley Nelson perfectly re-directed a Kevin Ulanski shot into the top corner of John DeCaro's net to make it 2-1 at 5:24. That score remained until late in the period, when David Rutherford crossed the Colorado blueline and ripped a quick shot over Jones' right shoulder to knot the score at two with just over three minutes left in regulation.
Bossier-Shreveport generated a number of great chances early in the overtime period, but couldn't manage to beat Jones and end the game. Then as Colorado turned the tide, Glasser received a pass in the high slot and had time to set up and beat DeCaro with a glove-side slapper to end the game.
John DeCaro (9-3) finished with 25 saves in the game, while the Eagles' Kyle Jones (4-3) turned aside 29 shots. Bossier-Shreveport outshot Colorado 31-28 in the contest.
The teams will be right back at it Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center with Game 2 of the President's Cup Finals as the âBugs look to even the series at one game apiece before going home to host Games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary) at the CenturyTel Center.
Opening faceoff is set for 8:05 pm Central Time, with radio coverage starting at 7:45 on News Radio 710 AM KEEL. Don't forget about the Mudbugs' live CHL-TV watch party as well at Archie Hebert's Sports Bar & Grill at the Villagio in Bossier City!
