Charlotte Eagles News Release

Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Eagles will host the Los Angeles Blues on Wednesday night in a match that will have massive USL PRO playoff implications. The Eagles are sitting in 4th place in the USL PRO standings while the Blues are only a point behind in 5th place. The top four teams will host a playoff game so securing three points will be crucial for the Eagles.

The Blues are coming into Wednesday night's game off a tough 2-1 loss to the Richmond Kickers on Sunday, July 21st. The Blue took an early lead on a Matt Fondy goal in the 5th minute. Richmond answered with a Brian Ownby goal in the 76th minute. The Kickers kept their league record 19 game unbeaten streak intact with a David Bulow penalty conversion in the 86th minute to earn the 2-1 win over the Blues.

Charlotte and Dayton played to a hard fought scoreless draw in front of 1,032 fans on Saturday, July 21st at Queens Sports Complex. The two teams were led by outstanding play from their goalkeepers who combined for 9 saves between them. While there were no goals in the contest there were plenty of fouls, 23, and shot, 22, to keep the fans attention. Remco Klaasse from Dayton came close to opening the scoring in the final five minutes of the first half but both of his shots hit the woodwork. Charlotte came close to a game winner but Christian Meza's header off of a Nate Thornton cross hit the crossbar in the 85th minute.

The LA Blues are the second highest scoring team in the league with 43 goals, trailing only Orlando who has 45. The Blues have had 14 different players score a goal this season, with Chris Cortez leading the team with eight goals. Matt Fondy has scored six goals in only five games and was the most recent USL PRO Player of the Week.

It will be an intriguing matchup between a potent LA Blues offense and a Charlotte Eagles defense which has only given up eight goals in 10 home games this season. In the previous matchup the Blues scored three goals in the first half and withstood a late Charlotte rally to win 4-3 in Los Angeles.
