August 29, 2014 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charlotte Eagles News Release
Charlotte N.C. - The Charlotte Eagles faced off against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds tonight in their second to last regular season home game. A Miroslav Cabrilo header in the 75th minute was enough to earn a crucial road victory for Pittsburgh.
Heading into the match the Eagles were in 9th place, just one spot away from making it to the USL PRO post season while the Riverhounds sat two spots behind them in 10th, only trailing the Eagles by one point. As a result of tonight's match the Eagles now sit in 10th.
The game started with a number of good opportunities for the Eagles in the first ten minutes of the game. One coming from Fred Sekyere when he took a cross from Zak Boggs in the 6th minute, but Pittsburgh goalkeeper Mike Lisch was able to get a hand on it just before Sekyere, Wells Thompson gathered in the rebound and took a shot that went just over the crossbar.
The first half continued to give both teams good opportunities but neither team was able to capitalize. In the 42nd minute it looked as if Pittsburgh was going to open up the scoring when Jose Angulo sent in a deflection from Danny Earls but Angulo was called offside before the ball had gone in. The match headed into halftime scoreless.
The second half continued as the teams continued to create opportunities. The Eagles got a good opportunity right at the hour mark when they got a free kick just outside of the box but weren't able to get it past Pittsburgh's defense. Fred Sekyere almost put the Eagles on the board when he took a good one-touch off of Drew Yates but the shot went just wide of the right post.
In the 76th minute the Riverhounds took a corner kick and Miroslav Cabrilo was able to get a header off of it and put it past Alec Kann putting the Riverhounds up 1-0. Charlotte pushed everything forward in the game's final twenty minutes but couldn't break through a stout Pittsburgh defense.
Charlotte now travels to Montreal to take on the Impact Reserves at 1 pm on Monday, September 1st. The Eagles will return home for their final USLPRO home game on Saturday, September 6th as the Harrisburg City Islanders come to Queens Sports Complex for a 7 pm kickoff.
