Charlotte Eagles News Release
The Charlotte Eagles lost 1-0 earlier in the year but got revenge Saturday night, beating the Richmond Kickers 4-1. Richmond took the early on a Christopher Agorsor goal in the 19th minute. Charlotte responded with goals from Nate Thornton in the 24th minute, Joseph Kabwe in the 65th minute, Miguel Ferrar in the 87th minute, and Christian Meza in the 91st minute.
Richmond got off to a good early start in the 12th minute when Luke Vercollone got a good shot off but Charlotte 'keeper Eric Reed stopped it with a beautiful diving save.
The Kickers got on the board first in the 19th minute when Agorsor slipped one past Reed.
Once Richmond got that one goal lead, they pressed for more but Thornton caught them off guard in the 24th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
Charlotte and Richmond traded blows for the next 12 minutes until Jorge Herrera took a free kick and missed Kabwe by inches.
Richmond got one more chance before halftime but could not get the ball past Reed.
The teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.
Coming out of the locker room, both teams were looking for an opportunity and Charlotte had the first one in the 47th minute when a great run of play ended when Darryl Roberts was stopped by a diving Richmond 'keeper Ronnie Pascale.
Richmond had the next real opportunity in the 56th minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box but the Charlotte defense headed the ball away to end the threat.
Charlotte managed to take the lead in the 65th minute when Kabwe scored to put the Eagles in the lead 2-1.
Richmond had a great opportunity to equalize in the 77th minute when a long pass found Edson Elcock who got a foot on it but not enough to redirect it and the ball ricocheted off for a goal kick.
The Kickers had their best opportunity to tie in the 83rd minute when William Yomby connected with a cross and headed the ball for what looked like a sure goal but Reed stretched out and knocked the ball away.
The Eagles got a insurance goal in the 87th minute when Ferrer dribbled through the defense and curled one just inside the post and past a diving Pascale, putting the Eagles up 3-1.
Ferrer capped off the night by assisting Christian Meza on a goal in the first minute of stoppage time to make the final score 4-1.
Ferrer was named Player of the Game with a goal and an assist.
