Eagles Beat Fire Reserves 2-1

Charlotte, NC -- The Charlotte Eagles received two second half goals to earn a comeback victory against the Chicago Fire Reserves. Chicago took a 1-0 advantage into halftime thanks to a Quincy Amarikwa header. Charlotte countered in the second half with more attacking pressure as Christian Ramirez and Ben Newnam scored to secure the victory.

Teams exchanged possession and free kicks in the opening 10 minutes but neither side could produce a goal. Jorge Herrera took a nice through ball from Christian Ramirez but couldn't beat Chicago Fire goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi on his first attempt, his second attempt was cleared off the line by the Fire defense keeping the game scoreless in the 15th minute.

The Fire Reserves came close to opening the scoring in the 30th minute. First Wells Thompson got around the Eagles defense but Eric Reed was able to come out and deflect his shot out of bounds. On the ensuing throw-in Quincy Amarikwa's header hit the post and went out for a goal kick. Chicago again created a chance as Yazid Atouba beat his mark and got to the endline only to see his cross be denied by Fejiro Okiomah.

Chicago opened the scoring in the 42nd minute as Quincy Amarikwa's header beat Eric Reed to put the Fire up 1-0 heading into halftime.

Charlotte opened the 2nd half pressing for the equalizer but were unable to find that final ball to unlock the Fire defense. Samuel Asante's shot and Stephen Okai's free kick were both covered by Tornaghi. The Eagles kept the offensive pressure up as Herrera's free kick narrowly missed the top corner in the 59th minute. Drew Yates was unable to beat Tornaghi in the 63rd minute as the keeper made a diving stop with his left foot.

The Eagles kept the pressure on the Fire but through the first 70 minutes but were unable to get a shot past the Fire goalkeeper until Samuel Asante's through ball found Christian Ramirez who slotted the ball past the keeper and tied the score at one a piece. Ben Newnam's low hard shot from 35 yards out beat Tornaghi again in the 75th minute to double the Eagles lead to 2-1.

Christian Ramirez extended his team goal scoring lead with his fourth goal of the season tonight.
