Albany Dutchmen News Release
2014 Dutchmen infielder Ernie Clement continued his stellar play at the College World Series Wednesday night, recording three hits and driving in what proved to be the game-winning run as Virginia forced a decisive Game Three with a 3-0 victory over Virginia.
Clement drilled three singles in the game, including a sharp hit through the left side of the infield to give Virginia a 1-0 sixth inning lead over the Commodores. Two more runs would score in the inning to provide the winning margin for the Cavaliers. The RBI was Clement's 22nd of his rookie campaign with Virginia, and the start was the 60th of the season.
The Rochester native also performed well in the opening game of the Series, a 5-1 Vanderbilt win. Clement made two outstanding catches at second base, including a leaping grab on a line drive that saved a run. Dutchmen fans came to expect such plays from Clement during his time in Albany.
Last season in Albany, Clement's .322 average in 19 games was second best on the team. Along with his impressive average, Clement hit five extra base hits and drove in 9 RBI. Clement's play in the final month of the season was a major factor in the Dutchmen qualifying for the PGCBL Playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Clement and fellow PGCBL alumni Jack Gerstenmaier and Matt Thaiss will seek Virginia's first ever baseball national championship Wednesday night in the winner-take-all Game Three of the series. The game can be seen on ESPN at 8 p.m., and updates on Clement's play will be provided by Dutchmen social media accounts.
