Bakersfield Blitz News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - Amarillo QB Julian Reese threw five touchdowns in the second half to lead the Dusters (7-4) to a 66-55 victory over the Bakersfield Blitz (4-7) at the Amarillo Civic Center on Saturday night. The Dusters failed to score a touchdown on only one possession the entire game.
The Blitz took the lead in the first quarter by scoring on their first two drives with only three total plays from scrimmage. Nathan Munson took an offering from QB Jason Thomas 31-yards to the end zone to make it 7-0. Munson set up the next score with a 52-yard kickoff return on the next drive. The visitors led 14-13 after the first quarter.
Bakersfield's offense continued to keep the pressure on Amarillo's high-powered scoring machine by connecting for touchdowns on their first four possessions of the game. Second quarter touchdown passes to Eric Mahanke and Rennard Reynolds, both answered by Dusters scores, gave the Blitz a 27-25 lead. Amarillo failed to convert on three straight extra points. The Blitz had the ball with less than 30 seconds remaining in the half, but Thomas was sacked in the end zone for a safety to tie the game at 27-27 at the half.
Amarillo took their first lead of the game on the opening drive of the second half. QB Julian Reese threw a pair of touchdowns in the third, hitting FB Joe Massey and WR Kendrick Walker. Thomas hit Reynolds on a 30-yard touchdown strike, and was just one yard from getting the tying score late in the third. But DB Craig Fulton, Jr. forced Thomas to fumble at the one yard line to take over.
The Dusters offense couldn't be shut down. A touchdown pass and a kick return both yielded touchdowns while the Blitz tried to keep pace. Phil Larmon picked up his first career touchdown reception for Bakersfield, but the Dusters answered. Reynolds' third TD reception of the game in the final minute brought Bakersfield within five points, but an onside kick didn't help the visitors, and Amarillo added a final touchdown to be the first team to score 60 points against the Blitz this season.
The Blitz returns home to host the Central Valley Coyotes in their third meeting of the season on Friday, June 24th at 7:00 p.m. That night, the first 2,000 fans will get a Blitz Pool Raft, courtesy of KGET-TV 17 and Rimer Homes. It's also Graduation Congratulations Night, in which all high school and college grads can get 2-for-1 tickets by showing their diploma or cap and tassels at the box office.
