
Ducks Sign Former Marlins Outfielder Darrell Whitmore

(Central Islip, NY, April 16, 2002) - The Long Island Ducks have come to terms with veteran outfielder Darrell Whitmore team officials announced today. The former draft pick of the Cleveland Indians spent parts of the 1993 and 1994, and all of the 1995 seasons with the Florida Marlins. Whitmore's career also includes over 690 games at the AAA level in the Marlins, Blue Jays, Pirates, Reds, Cardinals minor league systems.
"Having a player like Darrell will help us in several ways," says Ducks senior vice president of baseball operations Bud Harrelson. "His ability on the field will help the team win games, while his veteran leadership will guide some of our younger players." Whitmore will join the Ducks in Homestead, Fla. for Spring Training on April 21.
Whitmore spent the 2001 season with the Memphis Redbirds, the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. With Memphis, Whitmore amassed a .277 batting average with 11 home runs and 52 RBI in 112 games. During his career he has also hit the double-digit mark in home runs eight times, including two 20-plus home run seasons in 1994 with AAA Edmonton (20) and 1998 with AAA Nashville (21). Whitmore has a career minor league batting average of .290, and played overseas for half of the 1996 campaign when he played for the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan.
